  • Horrible NXT 2.0 Experience

I just received my brand new car and prepped it for its first wax/polish. I've used many different waxes and polishes, such as Zaino and Blackfire over the past years but since I didn't want to order anything I went to the local store and picked up NXT 2.0 after reading some positive reviews.

I prepped the car as usual: rinse, dawn (2 bucket method), claybar, wash again, dry. Microfiber towels were used for washing and drying. At this point the car looked great.

I then used a microfiber pad to start the NXT application. On the very first application I knew something didn't feel right. I have waxed cars for years with different products but NXT was just impossible. It did not want to glide onto the paint like other products, such as Zaino or Blackfire. I tried using it even more sparingly, no difference. Tried using more of it, no difference.

After taking the twice as long as normal, I had finally completed waxing the entire car. When it came to removing the haze, it was ridiculously hard.

The wax/polish was very hard to remove and was very gritty. Even today, the next day, there are wax spots that won't come off unless I rub them with my finger.

The biggest problem are all the light scratches NXT 2.0 caused on the clear coat. I have never had anything even close to this problem on any other car I have waxed with any other product. To me, this is completely unacceptable.

After my first and only use of NXT, I threw away the bottle because of the application and damage caused to my brand new car. I just wanted to post this and hear what the community had to say about this experience.

Were you applying it in the sun?

I really don't know what caused such an experience.

Ummmm, I have never experienced the problems you experienced.

i think you should send get in contact with customer service, see what they say, maybe send in the bottle so they could test it. meguiar's has one of the best customer service, i'm sure they'll make it right with you. maybe something was on the pad before you put the wax on?

I really don't think the wax caused the scratches in the clearcoat. Sounds like you applied it too thick also. You should also use the foam pad that comes with the wax to apply it, microfiber applicators seem to grab and not glide as well on some paints.

Extremely not like Next Tech Wax.

            It never happened to me.

It sounds like it was just sticking to your paint. As mentioned above, was your paint surface hot? Did you clay just before waxing? The same should have happened to your clay bar, if lubricant have dried out quickly, the clay just sticks instead of gliding.

I never anything remotely similar to that experience with NXT 2.0. It's by far the easiest wax I've ever worked with.

Was the store a high volume store? If not, maybe the wax is extremely old or may have been subjected to wide temperature changes, etc. Or the product may have even been returned by a customer and put back on the shelf. Was the bottle still sealed?

                Re: Horrible NXT 2.0 Experience

It was 68 degrees outside and everything was done in complete shade. This is not my first time prepping or waxing a car. The issue was not with the pad. I have many of them which I have used before and this was a brand new one.

The clay was not sticking since the body was not hot.

The bottle was sealed - don't know the volume of customers at the store.

Regarding the application- like I wrote above, I have been prepping and waxing cars for years. I thought maybe I had applied too thick so I tried with significantly less. That did not make any difference, so then I tried it with more. It was futile. I know from my early experience that its very easy to overuse a wax and completely unnecessary.

I just picked up some Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 to see if I can cover up the fine abrasions.

A perfectly prepped car needs polish after a Dawn wash.

                    Questions

First off, you say "new" car. Whats the year and make? New as in 2011 or new to you?

You used dawn to wash your car? Why?

Clay. Did you happen to drop the clay bar?

                    You talk about:

The wax/polish was very hard to remove and was very gritty. Even today, the next day, there are wax spots that won't come off unless I rub them with my finger.
Im confused. Did you use a polish with the NXT? Remember Nxt2.0 is a Synthetic LSP. Also were your MF Towels clean?

Like others have stated, NXT2.0 is one of the easiest products to remove other then Meguiars new Ultimate Wax. What was your cure time?

To clarify, "new" means 2011 BMW. It is 6 days old.

Dawn to take off any contaminants - it traveled 1000+ miles on a carrier.

I know to never use a dropped clay bar. The clay bar I used was brand new.

I used NXT only on the clean car. MF towels were clean. I folded it and had 8 sides to removed NXT.

I let it sit on the car for 1.5-2 hours.

                        Re: Horrible NXT 2.0 Experience

Cure time seems a bit too long. I could see this making the NXT more difficult to especially if any sunlight hit the car.

Dawn has acid and degreasers in its formula and will strip anything on your vehicles finish. Polish should have been the next step since dawn was used but since it wasn't, do you remember if the finish felt smooth after the wash?

Was the application of the NXT smooth or was it hard to apply?

Im thinking the dawn wash had something to do with the start of your problems.

                          Re: Horrible NXT 2.0 Experience

No sunlight hit the car and the body was cool to the touch.

The paint/finish felt how it should after a wash. The car was completely clean and looked great before the NXT application.

I've just never experienced anything like this. I'll still use Meguiar products but never NXT again. It'd be fine to not work but to actually damage the clear coat is inexcusable.

Congrats on the new BMW.....BTW what color is it if I may ask?

In my 25 years of professional detailing I have never washed a vehicle with dawn, it's just one of those "dish soaps belong in the kitchen, not on a cars paint".

What was the method of washing you employed, 1 bucket or 2, mitt or sponge....

After you washed and dried the vehicle did you evaluate the surface or just start claying?

After claying what did the paint look like? Good rule of thumb clay dropped gets tossed.

I have been using NXT since it's original formula was released and have never experienced this using the Meguiar's applicator pad or a W9006 on my D/A. If your MF applicator pad was new, was it washed? if it was old was it dirty?

In many cases MF towels that are new and not laundered can also scratch. Did you remove the country of origin tag? those definitley can scratch.

I always recommend that you perform a test spot on an isolated area to check for desired results. You would of been able to isolate the problem and adjust your methods had you done the above. Then moving forward provide the appropriate job and get the desired results...

We very often forget that paint is easy to scratch and sometimes harder to correct, especially by hand.

Here is an example of a brand new Lexus RX350 I detailed yesterday that only had 300 miles on it and 2 weeks old. It had water spotting from the recent rains, so the customer attempted to correct this by hand himself. Keep in mind this guy is a Hot Rod collector and is very familiar with car care, so he thought...

So he washed, clayed with Mothers, used 3M compound cleaner by hand, 3M polish and wax also by hand, using new MF towels that had not been laundered.

Here is a couple photos of what I saw.....

So this took me 4 hours of to correct....customer watched over my shoulder the whole time!

I'm not questioning your ability, just brainstorming and throwing out ideas that come to mind. You said your car was on a transport for over 1,000 miles before you took delivery. I don't see a dealer letting a car with that much dirt etc (especially a BMW) leave the lot that dirty so odds are good that one of their "detailers" most likely went over the car with a speed wax of some sort and gave you the DISO (Dealer Installed Swirl Option), I'll bet the car was nice and shiny when you picked it up.

Perhaps your Dawn wash removed the cover wax put on by the dealer and revealed the damage that was already there. You mentioned every step in a complete detail except one, polishing. If there were defects, your method did nothing to remove them.

From the sound of your post, you were probably getting more than a bit frustrated during the waxing process, could you possibly have gotten ahead of yourself and gone too fast or maybe got 'overenthusiastic' and rubbed too hard? There is no pure (non abrasive) sealant/wax that will scratch paint, that leaves the applicator. While microfiber is excellent for removing wax, it may not be the best choice for wax application unless you're working on defect removal (Meguiar's new microfiber pads for the PC being an example).

As for the diffculty in application and removal of NXT . (I have used Zaino before and I have to say that it is one of the easiest to apply, in the proper lighting so you can see what you're doing, sealants I have worked with). I have had similar problems, with Meguiars newer sealants but I'm dealing with SS paint that has proven to be a real p.i.t.a. to work with no matter what I use. My suggestion is to start over and work one panel at a time to make sure you stay consistant and include a polishing step such as Ultimate Polish (which even my paint likes). Granted it will take a much longer time going slowly one panel at a time, but the results should speak for themselves.

Again, I'm not questioning your ability, just throwing things out there for thought.
