Re: Do I have to machine wash my MF towels after EVERY use?
Of course you have to wash towels after each use.
Every time you're using a towel, whether it be to remove wax or polish, apply or wipe off dressings / cleaners etc....you're picking up a certain amount of dust/polish residue/wax residue/ etc (let's call them 'contaminants'). The microfibre towels scoop these up and trap them within the fibres of the towel.
If these 'contaminants' are not released from the towel (by washing them), you're telling me that you'd use these same towels on a 'fresh' car, thereby running the risk of re-introducing these contaminants to a 'clean' surface?! How do you think swirl marks happen!! This is a risk that any and all detailers / enthusiasts should not want to take.
If I've used a towel on a car, I won't use it again until the towel has been washed.
Furthermore, before a wash I separate my towels into 'wax/polish' and 'other cleaners'...I don't want any glass cleaner residue from my cheapy MF's going onto my SS MF's which I use to remove waxes and polishes...when you machine wash this risk is by and large eliminated, but again, you can't be too careful!!!
And as far as time, my washing machine has a 20 minute quick cycle for 'synthetic' products, which microfibre luckily happens to be. So for anything not too badly soiled, they get a quick wash & rinse and they're good to go again! For really badly soiled stuff, I'll soak them overnight and then put them through a 3 hour wash if necessary! Sometimes I'll just throw them out because they're beyond saving!
If you were a customer, would you like it if you saw your detailer using cloths that looked like they'd been sitting in the dirt beforehand? I think not!
I would much rather spend a little extra time to ensure all my cloths are clean. This way I'm giving myself every possible chance of achieving the best possible result at the next detail. Otherwise, I'm shooting myself in the foot.
