  • Question about coated wheels and glazing/waxing

Hi, I searched to see if I could find an answer without starting a new thread, but no luck.

I have a set of wheels that are coated in a black chrome epoxy. I really do not know the details on how they were finished, just that it is a coating. Over the course of the 4 months that I have had them, they have developed tiny scratches that drive me crazy. They are also insanely hard to keep clean. There is no way that I would think about using something with any type of abrasive in it, mostly because I don't know the exact details of the coating, and I definitely don't want to damage them in any way.

So, my proposed solution would be to give them a coat of CG EZ creme glaze, which will hopefully cover most of the tiny scratches and them seal them with CG M seal or CG wheel guard. Does anyone have an idea if his will be safe for the wheels? I am just trying to figure out if I am on the right path or if I should just stick with something wheel specific. I have read some threads around the web about glaze being hard to remove from wheels, but there is a lot of exaggerated/misinformation out there. Thanks for the help everyone!

A pure polish and/or wax for paint wont hurt wheels.

Hopefully someone can explain the coating more, or clarify for us. You may be able ot do more, maybe not.

Looks more like a darkened chrome... not sure about the epoxy part.

Re: Question about coated wheels and glazing/waxing

If the wheels were made in the last 10 years, they are most likely machined/polished aluminum with a powdercoating over the metal. The powder is usually vinyl or some other polyester material that is baked onto the wheels. It comes in solid colors, metallics, and transparent colors. You have a smoke-tinted clear probably. Any waxes or polishes safe to use on modern urethane paints will work great on glossy powdercoated parts. The coating is extremely tough and not much will hurt it.
