Sodium lauryl sulfate is the main ingredient in soaps, shampoos and many hygiene products. It is essentially the salts of fatty acids. It is used in lower concentrations in products like toothpaste, shaving cream and shampoos, while products like degreasers, floor cleaners, car wash soaps, ect., is used in higher concentrations. SLS is a surfactant and is highly effective.

Dishwashing soap is a surfactant, and has much more SLS than hand soaps and shampoos. Car wash soaps indeed have SLS, but are engineered to be gentle on automotive paint finishes. Soap has been around for thousands of years, and is not very complicated. The effectiveness, or the ability of soap to break down and remove oils and residues could be dictated by how much SLS is in the formula.

I would think that a reputable car car company like Meguiar's can handle coming up with a formula (car wash soap/shampoo) that won't strip the wax off of the paint. After all, the first recorded evidence of the production of soap-like materials dates back to around 2800 BC in Ancient Babylon.

I'm not crazy about Gold Class wash, but I certainly never have experienced any of the issues described in that link.

Ask them if they have any test results indicating that Gold Class strips more wax than their preferred brands of shampoo.
