  • “Layering” with M07

I’ve been lurking here for quite some time, searching old threads, doing the “cut and paste” in order to assemble my own guide to Meguiars products. My thanks to the moderators and contributors here, as this forum is truly a wealth of information. I’ve been a fan of #7 for over 30 years, back when it was labeled “Sealer and Reseal Glaze”, and have yet to be able to find another product that matches the gloss quality. My current toy is an “87 El Camino, featuring the original deteriorating lacquer paint. It receives a yearly treatment of a clay job, followed by M07, topped with NXT, then M26 or Collinite 845, which gives it a helluva shine considering the poor paint condition. My question concerns maintenance of the finish thru the year. Normally, I just use spray detailer or Griot’s spray wax thru the year, and an occasional topping with M26. I’ve read that M07 can be applied over the wax as a gloss refresher just before a show or cruise. When I attempt to do that step, I still pick up a considerable amount of color on the pad. Is there any solvent content in #7 that compromises the wax/sealant film? I’d hate to think that the multiple layers of wax and/or sealant I’ve applied are being wiped away. Thanks in advance for your comments.

    Re: “Layering” with M07

I asked a similar question a week or so ago about layering a pure glaze like m07 over an existing coat of sealant but instead of leaving it there putting another coat of sealant on top to lock in the fresh glaze, no one responded though.

I might just try it, the question is whether it's even worth it, if the glaze on top of the first sealant layer might mix with the sealant and not look good.

Wiping a liquid over the paint with an applicator will have a cleaning action, even if it was just water.

So yes, I would say any wax, etc left would be affected.

If you are getting color transfer, you are going through the sealant. I would be more concerned, however, that you are achieving color transfer with a non-abrasive product.

        That should not happen.

Maybe someone can chime in with experience to the contrary, but I personally have never experienced any type of color transfer while applying a pure polish such as M07.

What are you using to apply it? How much force is being applied?

Is the El Camino garaged? I assume that it is, given that you are showing the car.

Mike Phillips is the man to ask, with all of his experience with #7 and single stage paint systems.

Yes, it is garaged. I try and drive it on a regular basis, but it's primarily a "fair weather" car. Regarding color transfer to the applicator, virtually any product other than a pure non-cleaning wax will leave some of the burgundy paint color on the pad. My concern is if any solvents in M07 are cleaning off the NXT or M26.

I think it is fair to say that if paint is being transferred to your pad, then the wax is no more, either because it has been removed by the process of applying #7 or because it had already dispersed.

My rule of thumb is that if you apply anything on top a wax/sealant other than another layer of wax/sealant or a QD / QW, it will take off the wax underneath.
