  • How to properly layer wax

Hi guys, this is my first post here but Ive been lurking around for quite a while. Have been using Meguiar's products for as long as I can remember and love them.

Anyway, on to my question; I was reading a performance car magazine today and there was an article on getting your car ready for show season. The write claimed that to layer his Carnauba wax he would put on a layer with a DA, let it dry, and then before removing the first coat put a second coat on top. Then he would let that coat dry and remove the wax. He called it "burnishing" the wax. Is there any truth to this? Is this a valid or useful method for layering wax? Any opinions appreciated.

Re: How to properly layer wax

    Welcome to MOL! My friend!

I usually apply a first coat of wax... Let it dry for 6 hours. Remove with a SS MF.. and then i apply another coat of wax. Then let it cure for another 6 hours.. then remove with a clean SS MF.

    This is good for weekends...

Also i prefer a coat of NXT and 2nd coat GC.

i lay down a layer of wax (m20 or nxt depending on my day) and let it dry until the wipe tests shows it is ready to be removed. i then wait and let the wax cure for at least 8hrs or until the next day (depending on the time of day) and then lay down a second coat of wax (this time normally nxt or m26)....this being said if i am detailing a customers care i take off the first coat of wax and then do the interior then lay a second coat of wax right after the interior, i do not wait hours and hours for it to cure. i only wait that time when it is my care or a buddies and have access to it for 2 days or so.

I usually do what you guys do, was just wondering if it does anything to wax again before buffing off the first coat.

I usually dont like waiting until the next day or so, is it ok to put the second coat on after you wipe the first off?

Re: How to properly layer wax

Putting a second layer on right away is "ok" but I believe it has been proven that giving your wax time to properly cure before adding a second coat is best.

I would never think to put wax on top of unbuffed wax....not saying don't, just not something I have ever heard of. I always wax/remove/repeat.

There's a video on the Griots Garage website that demonstrates this particular technique. Had me cringing at the thought of applying fresh wax to already hazed wax without removing it.

The only concern I see is this. Unless you surround the vehicle in a bubble. There is going to some contaminants settling in the wax while it cures. now you rubbing those particles in your freshly corrected paint. Not liking this idea.
