  • Can you use the 4" pads to polish metal?

Does anyone know if you can use the 4" maroon, yellow, or black pads with chrome polish or metal polish to polish a bumper or a wheel, on either the DA or the rotary? If so, which color one would you use?

I have used the 4'' Orange Lake Country pads on a PC to polish metal

Yes, but the cut level jumps because of the smaller diameter. I just dial the DA down one setting from what I would normally use with a larger pad.

The pad will be of no use on paint afterward.

Is that because it tears it up or because you can't mix chemicals?

My experience has been the not mixing chemicals issue. Your mileage may vary.

Part of the reason is that the foam wears out, the other reason is that the foam will absorb the metal. I have polished magnesium, and the orange pad turned pitch black.

I doubt you'd want to use that pad on paint ever again. Once used on metal, you'll prolly want to keep the pad a "metal only" pad.

Okay, thanks. The towels I have used to polish chrome do turn black, plus the ones I use the Mag/Aluminum polish on them turn pink/red too! I was thinking about getting a Powerball but I thought I'd try this first.

Powerball is a great tool. You should try it.

I am sure I will get one at some point, probably more than one. My husband has a drill though it isn't cordless. Some applications I think work better with a round shape than a flat shape to polish, like getting around a tailpipe.
