  • Noob question on Swirl X for a new Car.

Hello Everyone. I am looking for some insight on how I should handle my detail for this weekend.fficeffice" />

I have a new 2010 Nissan Maxima. It is a dark Grey color. It has some swirls and minor scratches thanks to the horrible winter we had here in ffice:smarttags" />Jersey. I recently looked into Auto Detailing and figured I would give it a try myself. So I am definitely a Noob here. I was wondering if I can just use Swirl X for the swirls and the scratches. I applied Scratch X by hand, but didn’t really see any results. My process is below….but I could really use some insight to see if I am doing this correctly. I think my big concern is will the Swirl X cause any damage to the paint? I have read about working it in, but I don’t want to work it in too much. Do I stop working it in when it starts to dry? I am going to use a DA polisher with the yellow buffing pad for the Swirl X and a finishing pad for the DC Polish. Any recommendations….cautions? Any help you guys could provide would be much appreciated.

    Swirl X
    Deep Crystal Polish
    NXT Wax

Yes. Ur process looks good. Work the swirlx in but dont let it dry on the paint. Also do small sections @ a time. Ur list of steps look good and some people like to wash again after claying. Its also good to get some grit guards and hight quaility micro fiber cloths take ur time and it will come out great! Good luck! Dont 4get were here to help

You should read through the 5 Step Paint Care Cycle for a full rundown on what to look for when evaluating your paint as well as the hows and whys of defect correction.

Your process sounds good though. Don't be overly concerned about overworking SwirlX. Even with the power of the tool being more aggressive than what you've been able to do by hand, the overall approach here is still quite gentle and safe. Keep in mind that if you're not removing your swirl marks then even buffing for 20 minutes is removing almost no paint at all; if it were the swirls would be long gone!

Thanks SX4DUDE2013! I already have 2 Grit Guards and about 6 Supreme Shine Microfibers. I am using only Meguiars stuff because they are rated the best. I do have another question though....I do have one deep scratch (someone was kind enough to rub against my bumper). I am afraid to use Ultimate Compound for it. I want to use it to get the scratch out because I don't want to create any more scratches and make it worse. Do you guys think if I use a foam applicator and some light pressure...I can get the scratch out without creating any new ones? Also....is it true I can tech wax my wheels and chrome? Thanks again for the help guys!

On the scratch...some cannot be SAFLEY removed. if its down to the metal u can try to blend it but cannot completly SAFLEY remove it. Ultimate Compund is a AMAZING product. Apply a small amount to a foam applicatior pad and work it with some passion. Try to apply the pressure evenly to th pad and u will be ok. Work it in for a few minutes and see how it goes but it may require more than one application...u can also try a few coats of scratch x 2.o before moving over to UC (its a little less agressive)...mabey post some pics?? Hope this helps...and CONGRADULATIONS on the maxima! it a great looking car

yess u can put 2.0 on painted surfaces...im not to sure about chrome though. Try meguiars metal polish

As long as the Swirl X doesn't cause any harm to the paint......I should be good. I have been lurking here for a while and I am using the Least agressive approach first!

            Thanks!

The extra polish steps seems unnecessary in my book. It's a brand new car and I highly doubt you'd notice anything from it. There are some polishing oils in the SwirlX too, so I think you can take out the DC polish.

Wouldn't I want to do the polish step as well? It's a dark color and I really want the finish to POP before I seal it in with the wax.

On a brand new car, polish might not make any noticeable difference. But, it certainly wont hurt.
                        - I do it on my brand new red car
                        - polish actually ALSO helps the wax bond better to the paint surface.

So, if you dont mind the extra time for possibly small improvement, go ahead.

                          .

I did not know that. How do you know this?

A pure polish is an optional step.

Meguiars said that in a previous post - where someone was asking if polish interferred and they said no, it actually helped.
