  • Paint Problems

This is a long story, but I hope someone out there can help me finally find a solution.

This all started about a month ago when someone ran into the front of my Dodge Stealth in a parking lot while I was gone and had the decency to not leave any information and just run from the accident. I brought it to a body shop and he repaired the fiberglass and stripped the entire front bumper and repainted it.

It looked brand new at first, but a few weeks later, a few areas began to sink inward and the outer rim of these sinkholes had a circle etched in it that could only be seen under cloudy conditions and not in direct sunlight. I brought it back to him and he said the paint had dried inward so he wetsanded it, which got rid of the etched in circles.

They came back a couple weeks later and now I have even deeper sinkholes from the wetsanding and what makes this more obvious is that the car is black.

There is really only one sinkhole that is fairly obvious which I would like to get rid of:

Is there anyway to even out the paint surface? I really don't care about the circles so much anymore because they can't be seen in direct sunlight, but if anyone knows a fix for it, I would greatly appreciate it.

I went back to the body shop and they said I need a whole new front bumper which costs around $800 so any cheaper solutions would definately help.

It looks like the body shop did a very shoddy repair to begin with. It may have looked nice at first, but the reappearing sinkhole is evidence that the job was not performed correctly. Did you have it repaired under an insurance claim? Most insurance companies will lean on the body shop to do the repair right.

No, I didn't have it repaired under an insurance claim. The guy at the body shop said that if you paint repaired fiberglass, it will not be perfect and the paint will sometimes dry inward. Is this really the case? I just want to know the cause of the paint drying inward.

Nice looking Stealth you have there. Is that a '95 SOHC? I used to have a '92 and a '95. I loved them both and wish I still owned them. Are you a member of www.3si.org? I still frequent that forum occasionally. I hope you get your problem resolved with the bumper..............

Close, its a '94 DOHC non-turbo. I love these cars too. Its a car most people don't know of and it surprises a lot of people with how quick it is. I've looked at that site before to figure out how to do certain repairs, but I'm not a member. Its been a while since I've been on 3si though and I forgot about it so thanks for the link.

Here are a couple pictures of my Stealths that I no longer own. I still have a soft spot for Stealths and I am actively looking for one but I'm having trouble finding one in decent shape....................
