  • Do you always wax the roof?

For those with detail shops doing paste wax for customers every day, do you always wax the roof on taller vehicles like large pickups or vans?

My process for detailing the roof is pretty consistent for larger vechiles such as pickup trucks, SUVS, and vans:

    Wash
    Clay
    M66
    NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0

Although all the sides of the vehicle are important to protect, I think the roof, hood and trunk lid are one of the most important part of the vehicle. Think about it, sun beating down, fallout, bird doo, etc.

      Just my .02 cents.

I totally agree, the girls in our shop have not been waxing the roof on larger vehicles due to the fact they just cant reach up there, but were going to have to figure out something with ladders or something because once in a while the auto comes back with the owner asking why we did not wax the roof.

            Just curious,

how do your customers know whether you waxed the roof or not.

I think clear coat failure and oxidation occur mostly on the roof (or other horizontal panels). So waxing the roof is definitely a good idea.

You'll know when they don't come back again!

Its not hard to tell if you stand back and look at the car from the front about 15 feet back. Not waxed also means not properly washed on top either.

I agree 100 %. This is one of the "must be" protected areas.

Re: Do you always wax the roof?

I feel strongly enough about the horizontal panels that if I am put in a situation where I can only wax part of the vehicle, I do them FIRST due to the reasons Andy M listed. This is especially important if the vehicle is kept outside most of the time.

For getting someone up to work on a taller vehicle, a 3-step ladder or the painter's helper scaffold that is about 18" or so tall are two excellent options.

                        Morning,

I always do the roofs! When a person comes to you to have their vehicle detailed, they expect their whole vehicle to be detailed and waxed. To do otherwise in my opinion is very dishonest. That would be like getting an oil change and the dealer only replaces the oil but not the oil filter because no one is going to see that it is still the old filter.

Re: Do you always wax the roof?

Roofs are a challenge especially on vans. I just found that out recently on a mini van I did. But, what I did find is that if I opened the doors especially the side sliding doors of the van I could reach the areas up top fairly easy. You just need to be really careful with your cord and other equipment you may be using. The roof of the van was really really dirty. Really tore up some clay. I also used a small 2 step kitchen step stool to reach the rear of the van.

It can and should be done.

Re: Do you always wax the roof?

Yeah, if someone was paying me money as a professional, I don't care how hard it it, I'd definitely to the roof. 1. Because it's just plain honest (unless otherwise noted upfront) 2. Because it's one of the most important areas to wax and 3. I like challenge and wouldn't be detailing if I didn't.

I mean, I could do all of that to my own car for free, so if I was paying someone to detail my car, I should the heck would expect them to do the roof. In fact, if it's not noted upfront somewhere on a contract, and a detailer is "detailing their car," in court, that would mean the entire car and therefore the detailer could lose a small claims lawsuit.

Good answers everyone. Keep in mind all customers knew if we were not going to do the roof. Nothing held back, nothing dishonest here. Besides which, it was only the very tall trucks and vans that weren't getting the roof done. We shall make greater endeavors to get up there somehow.
