Clear Coat gone??

I just waxed my aluminum rim's with Meg's Cleaner Wax and the terry cloth turned almost black..And when I was wiping the film that was there disappeared...Is the clear coat gone??

No, the clear isn't gone, I'd just say they were uncoated. Think clearcoat versus single stage. Your wheels would be "single stage". Make sense? You probably want to try Hot Rims Mag and Aluminum Polish. A truly fabulous product, IMO. Info from Autogeek:

Well, you said you got a black residue with Cleaner Wax, which was my first indication that they were uncoated. If you try the Hot Rims Mag and Aluminum Polish and you for some reason don't get a black residue, then you know they're coated. But to answer your question, no, it won't hurt them.

Just to clarify, Hot Rims M&A is not for painted/clear coated surfaces. So if you were to use it in an out of the way spot, and not get black (other than dirty gray) on your cloth, then do stop using it right away.

If it is bare metal, and you use soemthing like M&A, your cloth should be black black right away.

I never have anything dirty

I dont know if I have seen a pic on here of a cloth after polishing bare metal? Maybe one of Joe's airplane thread, or Tim's boat detail? But its like jet black soot from bare metal, even if the metal is in good shape.

OK, did a little internet searching and couldn't find a really great article to share, but what I understand is this: the black "soot" is aluminum oxide. I think seeing this would be like seeing dead paint on your applicator pad if you were working on single stage paint, except in this case, the black is "dead aluminum". I know that sounds awful, but that's the only way I know how to explain it.

I think seeing this would be like seeing dead paint on your applicator pad if you were working on single stage paint, except in this case, the black is "dead aluminum". I know that sounds awful, but that's the only way I know how to explain it.

Thanks CieraSL for the info..I might try some of the M&A polish and see what that does..And I should have been more precise it was more like a gray than black..If that helps..
