Re: Clay bar not recommended for use by Ford, GM etc..

Hey thanks for all the input guys. He still hasn't answered my reply for documentation on the subject, so I think he was just spewing his own opinions.

I kind of suspected what the real truth was. But with all the experience on this forum I guess I just needed to hear it. Sorry If I caused such a commotion.

We'll this guy is at it again. The evils of Clay bars.

Care & Detailing - Clay Bar- Detail techniques - Ford/GM/Chrysler/MB/Porsche all have service directives that specifically refer to paint correction/contamination procedures and clay bar is not a referred procedure and specifically identified as a method which only removes the surface level paint contaminants and as...

While I dont agree with him saying claybars are harmful they do only remove surface level contaminates while below surface contaminates pretty much stay there. For that you will need a paint decontamination system.

I also see guys on that forum are asking what products remove subsurface level contaminates. There are two products that I know of that are both OEM approved for this and its Finishkare's and ValuGard's paint decontamination system. I dont have an account over there but you could relay this to them if you wish.

Perhaps it means nothing to him that Meguiar's has been working with the OEMs in their factories, service centers, and dealerships for decades. We have worked side by side with paint companies like Glasurit, PPG, etc for decades as well. When Nissan first brought their Infiniti luxury brand to market in the early 1990's they came to Meguiar's for input on paint care. Do we have a pretty good understanding of what works, what doesn't, what's harmful and what isn't? After 108 years doing this we'd darn well better. And if the paint companies and auto manufacturers come to us over and over again, doesn't that give you the answer?

As for our clay being "rated 3500 grit", we'd really like to see the documentation. We're patient, we can wait.

The title of this thread is the posterboy for the saying: "Take it with a grain of salt."

                    LOLOLOLOL

Some of his assertions are just plain laughable!!!

Like 40*F cold water for 30 minutes to remove orange peel??? LOLOLOL

If cured paint requires wet sanding to remove orange peel, how would cold water do it? The paint on his car was cured before it left the factory! I guess everyone in the North must have orange peel free paint considering the cold snow and ice rain we get! Nope we have it too! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Meguiar's clay is 3500 grit? That is so far fetched that I am still laughing at that one! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Even harder to take him seriously when he can not even spell Meguiar's correctly.

Paints are only designed to last 7 -10 years? I guess someone should tell my factory original 1999 Ford Super Duty that! LOLOLOL

I hope this well-guarded secret doesn't get out to! I wonder what will happen if my original single-stage 1979 paint finds out!!

I thought you guys would get a chuckle out of this

I think his credibility has been trashed on that site as he's been asked more than once to provide documentation on claims that he's been making regarding clay bars as well as other things.

Probably has never once used a clay bar, yet knows everything there is to know about them.

I would think the grit in clay bar is not exactly comparable to sandpaper?

IMO, any off the shelf products are designed to be not aggressive at all and youd have to work really hard to damage the paint using a claybar, etc.

Well, guess the paint on my parents' 1990 Honda Accord is shot. Weird, it's supposed to look so bad - why does it look almost brand new?
