Re: Ok Boys and Girls! Need help with Lacqer Paint.

Alright everyone. I just fond out tonight that this was a repaint in 1985.

Is it possible that this car could have clear on it? How many were still using lacquer in 1985? Was lacquer ever cleared?

    TIA

Clear started to take off in OEM painting in 1989, although I think there were a few exceptions in America (Corvette?) to that which were a bit sooner.

As for body shops in 1985, odds are it was single stage. Either way, it should be easy to identify. Just take something abrasive and rub it on the paint... check to see if color comes off on the pad or towel. No color = clear coat. Color = no clear coat.

Thanks Mark. I figured on doing that. The owner is emailing the guy he bought it off of tonight so I should have the definitive answer in the morning. I'll let you guys know and I'll take pics.

          Hi Andy,

GM started using clear coat paints around 1985 so it was availbale and in use already by that point.

            Tim,

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it only on a model or two? For some reason I want to say I remember the Corvette being one of the first GM cars to regularly get clear coat, and it was around 1989 that US auto manufacturers started to make it more of the norm than a rarity.

I know for example the S10 in 1985 still came with single stage from a previous job. I tried searching for the exact date but it is eluding me right now...

I know also that some Euro cars had clear before them too. But I would think body shops in 1985 would still be by far most familiar with a single stage style paint job and it probably took a while for them to begin switching over. Of course, I could be totally wrong...I wasn't old enough to pay attention to those things at the time

              Hi Mark,

I had a new 1985 GMC S-15 (same as Chev S-10) I ordered from the factory and it had clear coat from the factory. Ford started using it around the same time. I know that by 1988 all of the Ford trucks, except for a certain orange/red color and I believe an oxford white, were also clear coated.

Man...I just made myself feel old....

Well I guess this only goes to prove the idea that you never know how the paint will be from one car to the next! My friend and neighbor has a 1985 blue Chevy truck with single stage paint (100% original he claims)!

We had a 1989 Aerostar that had clear coat, but one of our 1980s Ford F150s was single stage- don't know what year it was though. I think it was a couple years older than the Aerostar.

At any rate, it only goes to show that the factory sprays what the factory feels like spraying...

Re: Ok Boys and Girls! Need help with Lacqer Paint.

OK everyone. The car was repainted in 1983. It is lacquer with lacqer clear according to the original owner. Now the original owner also said there are some thin spots. I don't think I am going to touch this with any kind of machine. Just think it's to risky.

I am still going to do it, all by hand however. What do you think the right combo would be for hand use. It's ashame because I really wanted to get the swirls out of this thing. They bug the heck out of me.

I'm thinking of definately using PRC151 for one product. I know this does have "fillers". Let me know what you all think.

By hand I would suggest Ultimate Compound (if you feel comfortable) for swirls. I would also suggest ColorX for dullness, but it will only address the finest swirls/scratches.
