  • Ok Boys and Girls! Need help with Lacqer Paint.

OK everyone. I have a detail to do next Sunday on a 1968 Hurst Olds. Sweet Car, but swirled up pretty good. I have never worked on lacquer paint, but I'm sure a lot of you have. Any tips, tricks? Anything to look out for? It's white with gold racing stripes and accents down the sides.

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy M.

Start gentle, might be thin in spots or soft, and will probably love polishing oils.

I'd try to use M07, as it is a pure polish and should absorb into the pores pretty well.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
      Remove swirls my friends.

What about as far as the correction goes?

Have you gauged the paint ? I would want to know what I had to start with.

I have done a few with very thin paint and worked #80 D/A several times and had very good results.

What shyneman said, go based off of how much paint is there, otherwise start least aggressive and do small test sections. You could try starting off with M205 perhaps?

              Frank,

I don't have a paint gauge, I do have just about every product you could imagine from Megs. That being said, the paint isn't really that bad, just some swirling on the hood and trunk. Other that that, it is in good shape.
The guy comes to Carlisle pretty regularly. You would probably know the car if you seen it.

Andy, see if you can find out anything about the history of the paint on this car. How long as the current owner had it, does he know if it's ever been rotary buffed before, any repair/repaint areas, etc?

While single stage paints tend to be softer and more responsive to polishing/correcting you're facing what could be a challenging task. White paints typically use titanium dioxide for pigment, and that is extremely hard stuff. We recently had a Thirdgen Pontiac Firebird with single stage white at an open garage. The paint was in horrible condition and required a very aggressive approach to get any sort of positive response from the paint.

Just giving a heads up here. As usual, start with a less aggressive approach and work up from there as needed. Just be aware that you could be facing some pretty hard paint.

You have a paint gauge but it is still at my house.

I would start out with some good old # 2 I have not tried it with D/A yet but I bet it would work , than # 3 or #80

#2 has always done a great job on cleaning up white paint

I would also reccomend #80. ColorX worked really well on my SS paint if there is any oxidation.

BTW, if you have any tricks for the rims let me know, I have the same ones on my Olds.

I would start with M80, singlestage paint loves the oils in M80 !
Always start with the least aggresive, most of the time SSpaint is pretty soft .
If M80 is'nt giving enough cut step up to M83 , apply a pure polish after the polishingstage to feed the paint, this will also give more dept and reflection .
After that M21, followed by M16 will give durable protection and a great shine !
I always used this combo on my white Lancia Delta !!

Re: Ok Boys and Girls! Need help with Lacqer Paint.

                              Hi Andy,

Lacquer paint can be polished to look awesome! It usually polishes out very well, but you need to be careful as it is usually quite/very soft and it is not hard to make a major irreversible mistake very quickly while buffing!

I would probably start VERY mild like M80 on a polishing pad and see how it polishes out. Gradually increase aggressiveness! Stay away from aggressive compounds as they may remove way too much paint and/or hazing that may be difficult to fully remove. Usually M80 will work quite well.

But also keep in mind that with the above said, white single stage paint can also be quite hard, so until you do a test spot, it is difficult to say.

I hate those kinds of details as with lacquer being usually soft, someone may have already buffed on it and it is quite thin. So tread VERY lightly!!!!!!!!!
