  • Full Detail on Audi

    Hey guys:

I'm new here but have been lurking on the forums for a while now. I've learned a lot just by reading and I've decided to jump into the detailing world. My car is a 99.5 Audi A4. I know it's been re-painted at some point however I'm not 100% sure what parts. I have some rust on the front fender which I am going to replace this year but I'm floating on whether to do the whole car or just the parts that are necessary. This is where the detailing comes in. I bought a 7424 and I am currently trying to work out all the defects to see how bad the paint really is. I'm currently using just 105 to get rid of everything and I am trying the KB method, as well as I can know it since it hasn't been published anywhere, but I think I've hit a bit of a roadblock.

BTW...car is Brilliant Yellow so I've darkened the photos a bit to make it easier to see.

    Here we go:

Roof - This is basically what the whole car looks like. The trunk looked like this before I started on it. The car passes the 5' test....even the 3' test....but the swirls are astounding.

Left Side of Trunk - 4 Passes with 7424, 105 and the KB Method
Sorry for the blurriness but I think you get the idea.

Right Side of Trunk - 10+ Passes with 7424, 105 and the KB Method

As you can see the results are quite good, and I know these are probably some RIDS, but here are my questions.

    1. Can I get these totally out with a 7424 and 105?
    2. Is it just the Audi Clear that's difficult to work?
    3. Technique ****?

Let me know what you guys think. I can try to re-shoot the pics if these aren't good enough.

Forgot to mention that I'm using Lake Country 6.5" Foam Pads. This is done with a Yellow pad.

That many passes on each side? I'm not quite fluent enough with PC's so I'm not sure if that's too much or not. Just seems like it is to me.

Hi hogan, your first pic looks pretty conventional as far as swirls go.Your second pic is a bit blurry to be able to really tell. The third pic looks as if the scratches are quite deep and can't be rubbed out.

I wondered that myself. I don't have a problem with some of the RIDS being left, however, when I run my fingernail over some of them I can BARELY feel them, if at all. It seems to be cutting them out but of course at the expense of the clear coat.

It doesn't look all that great as is. Will polish and sealant fill in some of the RIDS? What about a rotary?

The deep scratches, you'll have to leave alone.

Is it quite a hard clear coat to work with? I'm basing this on what others have said in the past about the hardness of German car's CC's.

seems hard! I did some wetsanding a couple of years ago to try and fill in rock chips and never sanded through.....seemed to smooth out ok. Other than that I don't have any comparison. I would assume the clear is hard then.......

This quote is from Bounty after he did a detail on an Audi:

Audi clearcoat is typically very hard...similar to Mercedes CeramiClear or GM two-step clearcoat (Corvettes, Cadillacs, etc).

going by your first pic, would you reckon you have removed quite a bit?

There is a link here on the forum which does go into depth regarding the KB method. Where it is? I'll try and look for it. someone else will probably be able to find it pretty quickly.

I thought Kevin was writing a paper that details it entirely? I was under the impression he doesn't have time to get it out yet....

I came across a full explanation acouple of weeks back.I think it was written up by Mike Phillips, but I'm not entirely sure on that.

Here's something you can start on:

Hi, I’m new to this forum and detailing. I recently bought a PC 7242 & lake country orange, white and blue pads for my 2006 Mustang GT with Vista Blue (deep dark blue) paint. Although my car is fairly new, it had bad swirls in my opinion which were readily visible in direct sunlight. I hated it. It also had some

Also, use the search button at the top of the page, open it and type in 'Kevin Brown method' and you will see loads of associated posts regarding this.if you work your way through a lot of these, you might find your answer?

I was browsing all the hits that came up but most of them seemed to say "this part of it, but not all of it". I can't seem to find a complete explanation
