  • Just had front/hood repainted!

Hi guys, not sure if anyone was following my little adventure, so a quick summary...

    The Story

I had a million rock chips in my hood and front bumper, attempted to do a mass touch up, and sand down the blobs, but messed up and burnt my clear coat. So I got my front bumper and hood repainted at a shop DesertDawg recommended here in AZ.

Just picked up my car today, they did an EXCELLENT job, superb work. I found out that actually removed the panels and bake the paint onto the car as well (instead of just masking everything).

With that said, I suppose the paint will be ready for waxing sooner than later. The guy at the shop recommended a few weeks. I'll probably go with 30-60 days depending on my patience.

    Anyway, on to the question!

Although they did a great job, when I look in the sunlight there's a lot of million really minor small swirl marks. I imagine this is from when the buffed it. Fine with me! I was actually worried that when I got my car back I'd be bored since I'd no longer have anything to improve LOL

    Swirls

So anyway, I want to tackle the swirls. They're extremely fine, so I need the least aggressive product. I like sticking to the consumer line, however the least aggressive product is SwirlX, and if I recall correctly, this is NOT paint shop environment safe. Plus, it is more aggressive than some products in the professional line.

That being said, my question is what is the least aggressive product I should use to remove the swirls they left (that are fresh paint safe)?

And because one product can't solve everything, what's a secondary product I should purchase as a fail-safe incase the first one doesn't remove the swirls?

I'll soon purchase the G110, and some polishing/finishing pads. Any recommendations on the pads to use for what product and speed would be appreciated (sorry I know I'm being lazy because I've read the topics before where they listed the recommended settings).

Currently in my arsenal is ScratchX and Ultimate Compound. I plan to purchase SwirlX to tackle my fathers car for father's day, so I'll order whatever product I'll need along with it.

    Protection/LSP

I know there's a few topics regarding protecting your paint after it is painted. Often I've seen these topics resulting in the final answer being to simply "leave it alone" or to use M07. Luckily I just purchased some M07! I believe one of the Meguiar's videos I watched recommended speed glaze? Or was it machine glaze.. I forget. I think M07 is water based, but I live in AZ... so... haha... I think it'll be fine on its own. Anyone else have suggestions?

I'll also probably stick a clay bar to the car, I shouldn't find much but it'll help with some areas...

DC1 is the least aggressive paint cleaner. The old Scratch X formula is very mild as well, if you can find it (or have it). So, if you want to, you can clay, use a paint cleaner, and then use M07. Hopefully others will chime in with regards to the G110.

I actually DO have some of the New Improved ScratchX 1.0 formula.

Not sure if its enough though. Also can't find DC1 anymore, I'll likely be ordering from ADS

You might like to pick up at least a little #80, even if you apply by hand. It has a paint safe, protective polymer in it.

Was that it? I think M80 was the one Meguiar's mentioned in their video. I'll have to watch it again.

I was thinking about using M09 since it is called.. swirl... remover... yeah.

But M80 seems more practical for the protective properties, but it may be more aggressive than I need... Hrmmm (waiting input)

Well, used by hand will make it gentler....

              Re: Just had front/hood repainted!

I see what you're saying.. Basically just lightly apply it like a wax, and if I don't work it in, it should still protect. But I don't let it dry...

Also, I just noticed M82, that doesn't seem aggressive. But I've never read of anyone using it on here, same with M09...

              It's always M83/M80 and M105/M205 :/

The DA package I'm ordering from ADS comes with M205, so maybe I'll just use that, and maybe order some M80?

Also, is ScratchX 1.0 fresh paint safe?

                Re: Just had front/hood repainted!

When a product is labeled Body Shop safe that means there is no silicon in it. Silicon does not allow paint to stick to it so if it is in the air and contaminates the surface of a vehicle that is going to be painted it will cause FISH EYES.

After the car is painted and cured silicon products will not be an issue unless you need additional paint work on your vehicle and the shop does not go through all the steps to prep it.

I work fresh paint everyday and the fail safe product for me is 205/DA

                Good Luck

Awesome, I did not know that!!

Makes sense. So in that case, any product is "safe" except for a sealant/wax, right? So I can use SwirlX if I wanted... I think it is too aggressive though, so maybe M205 is a good choice. There's also M09 though, and M80, and even M82.. How do I know which to use? They seem closely related... And if I use one, do I finish with M80 for the protection?

                    Re: Just had front/hood repainted!

You will get awesome results with M205 on the DA and a polishing or finishing pad. It's very mild on a soft pad and the clarity it produces is like nothing I've ever seen before.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the products you mentioned M80/M09/M82/M205.

M82 and M09 are the mildest products, followed by M80 and M205

Use slow speed and soft pad if you are worried about aggressiveness, but all are mild products to start with.

M80 won't give you any lasting protection, after a few minutes in the AZ sun most of the oils will have flashed off anyway. It's hard to beat Nxt 2.0 for protection when the paint is cured

                      Re: Just had front/hood repainted!

Really? I heard you do some great work here in Arizona. Glad to get your opinion, it's especially useful since I know you're someone who deals with the heat problem as I do.

I might go with M205 then if it's nothing you've seen before.

You're saying that M80 isn't really worth it for the short lasting protection too, is that right? Now he said they baked the paint on, so I shouldn't have to wait as long before waxing... He suggested a few weeks though.

                        Thanks for the kinds words

Every paint is different, so I'm hesitant to recommend a certain combination without testing. I happen to have all of the products discussed...if you want to come out to Queen Creek I'd be happy to do a little testing with you to see what will work best. Then you don't have to spend a bunch of money on products just to see what works best.

That's a great idea. How late you up tonight? LOL

I'm starting a weird work schedule tomorrow at 11 AM - 10 PM, with Weekends+Thur off. I need to make my order from ADS before the weekend for father's day.

Use the least aggressive product to achieve the desired results. One great thing with Meguiar's Products the Information on the bottles and the Tech sheets is the plain English of what the product is recommended for.

                            # 80 or # 205 will make you smile.Hanv fun and post some pics.

I don't have a good camera yet but I convinced my folks to buy a new one just in time for father's day for when I detail my dad's car. It's being shipped now. If it arrives before I tackle my car I'll snap some shops

Just an FYI, I used M07 and it seemed to remove a good portion of the spiderwebs/swirls/haze/marring, or at least it made them less visible. Awesome stuff.
