  • 105 question

Just received some 105/205 today (first time with it) and am working it on the hood. For some reason it seems to be harder than expected to remove. It is very hard to wipe off. Kind of like dried DC2 (oops). Just wondering if this is a normal characteristic of 105. While waiting a week for it to arrive, I read all I could find about 105 and the Kevin Brown Method, here and elsewhere, and did not see this being much of a problem.

I primed a 6.5 Polishing pad with 105 then applied 4 pea sized spots to the pad and used DA on speed 5. Worked a small area (12X18") to start. Two hard passes and two slow ones to finish. It did a great job on the defects. By the second area, it was dusting before I could do that much, so I tried adding more product and that helped a little but it still seems to be drying and dusting too quick, from what I read? Four passes are hard to get unless I fly.

I think I might be fighting wax (NXT 2.0)? The hood, top and trunk lid were worked on previously with ScratchX 2.0, DC2, NXT 2. Then UC, DC2, NXT 2. All in the last two weeks. That's a lot of wax.

The hood is almost completed with 105 and looks great, although I had hoped for more. Each product has improved the finish (not to mention my evaluating skills, lol). So, as I take a break, thought I would throw this out and see what you guys think. Thanks a bunch.

    Re: 105 question

    I use very little 105
    I never have this problem
Try using 3-4 drops and see how your correction comes out, you need a bright light to actually see what's happening.
This might not work but give it a try.
I have no problem with using 3 drops.

      Re: 105 question

There's been times when it's wiped off hard and times when it's wiped off easy, I don't know the exact reason that affects the wipe-off performance outside the normal temperature, humidity, buffing cycle, etc.

When it wipes off hard I usually spray a little quick detailer on it use a good wiping cloth.

If you haven't already, check out this thread,

        Re: 105 question

Thanks, guys. So wax is not likely the problem then. OK, I will try QD and less product. I do remember reading about what you just said, Mike. The cut is great at any rate. I have read about using water mist and M34 too but hate to lose the cut. There is a good 21 page thread that I have read twice and I think I have a feel for the lub/cut thing from the experience of other users. Surely, my technique is suffering but, I am working on it, lol. BTW, that thread is titled, "Kevin Brown Method-My Understanding

A big thanks to Mike and Maserati Mario. Just finished the hood and it (M105) came off great with QD. Also just completed the first area (12X18") with follow-up M205 and WOW! WOW! WOW! If I were in competition, I would not tell anyone about these two superb products! Thanks again, guys!

Note: M205 works like a dream and was easy to remove. WOW!

I have the new DA approved version. Just got a 12 oz of it and M205 from ADS. I still cannot believe what it did to my old ragged paint. Amazing stuff! Wish I had a camera.

                    Re: 105 question

lol, Murr1525, you would probably laugh at it as it is just a rag, albeit a very beautiful one now. It is truly a shame that I do not have a better car to expend all this work on but, last Nov when I joined here, I stated that this work is therapy for me after having had five by-pass surgery. I always did enjoy doing this stuff but the last time was in the early-mid 80s when the paint was single stage and the wax was Classic. Then I tried some Megs, a bottle of polish iirc, and one of wax. And that was even better. Heck, back then the polish would take deep scratches right out! It was awsome back then. Of course, I had to 'spit-shine the car with it. These CCs can go take a flying leap!

But, I have been over it with clay, ScratchX, Scratch 2, UC, DC2, NXT 2. All, several times with each trip yielding improvements. It looks like I have finally found the best that I can do here with 105/205 though (unless I get some sand paper, lol, j/k).

But may I ask yet another question? After 105, I thought it was ready to wax. After 205, I was cleaning my pants. Now, would I benefit from topping the 205 with DC2 before waxing or not? The amount of work obviously is not a factor. Thanks!

I could just try it and see but would like a pro opinion. BTW, the new DA is so sweet!

Maybe a friend has one, or has a cell phone to take some pics for you.

As far as the polish, #205 is a cleaner/polish, so you covered that step. It would just be extra oils for the paint now. Can always save it till your next detail.

I also had your problem and tried all the recommended fixes (prime pad, smaller work area, water spray, more product, less product, faster speed, slower speed, wipe off with spray bottle, etc...) with little success in getting M105 to behave like many seem to describe.

From the descriptions, I expected M105 to behave like M205. M205 stays lubricated, does not dry out, produces no dust regardless how long it is worked, and it's easy to wipe off.

M105 is VERY different - it "drys" quickly and produces a moderate amount of dust.

                          Here's what I found works for M105:
                          1. I do not prime the pad
                          2. I spray a tiny amount of water on the pad (I check the pad after each section to insure it does not feel completely dry. Spray tiny bit more water as needed)
                          3. I apply polish to the pad. Spread on surface of paint before turning on polisher.
                          4. Turn on polisher
                          5. Within seconds of beginning to polish, the M105 appears to dry out. If you stop here, the wipe off is very difficult.
                          6. Don't stop - continue polishing.
                          7. The M105 will begin to dust and almost appear to breakdown like a diminishing polish. You can work as long as you like.
                          8. There will be very little visible M105 left on the paint and wipe off is very easy.

Followed up by M205 it produces very nice results.

Very nice results indeed! What you just described was very similar to something I read in that 'long thread' mentioned above. The author referred to it as the 'sweet spot'. The main difference was that he did not use the water. OK, I will give it a go on the next run. Only the hood is completed right now. Thanks for sharing that!

Man! Looking at that finish above makes me think that I might need to go over mine yet again with 105, lol! Maybe when I am looking at shiny bare metal, I will be happy? Oh my goodness!
