2hotford, I am thinking about picking up a rotary next spring. I really like the makita 9227, How would you compare it to the dewalt?

Also does the 9227 come with a wrap around handle and side handle as an option? or do you have to go with one or the other?
by the way some collection you got there, very nice.

      Hey,

The Makita 9227C comes with a bail handle. But if you order the 9227CY you will get the side handle. As for which one is best, that is more of a personal preference. At first I really missed the side handle as that is what I was used to. But now, I happened to like the bail just as much. Both have their respective advantages.

The differences between the Dewalt and the Makita are not that drastic. I like the Makita a little better as it is lighter, lots of power and a clutched start-up so the pad does not scream full speed the minute you touch the trigger. The Dewalt is heavy, lots of power, and not quite as smooth as the Makita. I tend to leave the Dewalt set up for compounding work and use the Makita for polishing. Personally, either one would be a great machine!

thanks 2hotford, i can't wait to get one and take it to a beater.

i also heard about a machine called Fien or Fein which also looks like a good rotary. but i think i'll end up going makita. maybe this weekend i'll head to loew's and see how they feel in my hands. i had a gift card for when i bought the pc (7336sp) at loew's it was 109 and i only spent like 50-60 out of my pocket. what a deal!

the side handle seems like it would give you slightly better control from side to side, but the bail seems like it would be better for pressure and keeping the pad flat. i'm trying to picture what position my arms and hands would be in, to see what would be more comfy.

          Hey,

As I said, the handle is truly a personal choice. I like either one. But IMO, the side handle may be a little easier to learn with.
