  • NXT 2.0, under 3M Performance Finish?

I'm NOT new to detailing even though I'm a newb here.....It's a much enjoyed hobby, after I started I grew to like it more than modifying my cars!

My question is simple: anyone forsee any issues with putting on 3M Performance finish OVER NXT 2.0? Anyone tried this yet?

Although there isn't much to go on, I've read a few seemingly great things about 3M PF durability(A detailer one one forum said his customer's neglected car was beading after 6 months), but it seems agreed it doesn't do much for depth or shine.....as we all know NXT 2.0 is pretty good in that area(it does EXCELLENT on my Onyx Black 2009 Mazda 6s), so I was thinking I'd new the 3M PF over an app of NXT 2.0, and hopefully combine the best features of all. I'm hoping to pick it up tomorrow, my local stores don't carry any so I'm thinking the ones near my work might. Don't worry, I'll report back after a few months with an update. TIA

I don't see why you couldn't. If you decide to do that, let us know how it turns out!

You might pick up some durability at the cost of a little lost NXT 2.0 shine, but we won't know until you try. If you can, take some pictures after the application of NXT and then again after you apply the 3M Performance Finish and post them back here.

            Good luck,

Actually I have lurked for a while anytime I wanted to know something specific about a meguair's product, and registered mainly for this question! I last applied NXT 2.0 about 4 days ago on the black car, and it's seen some light dust, and hope I can get the 3M product tonight.

wasnt trying to bust on you or nothing (if it came out that way I apologize)

I have always been contemplating the 3m PF, I got two bottles of 3M cleaner wax that were on discount for $5/a piece. The Perf finish was on sale too but I passed on it cause I already have Wolfgang dgps and Poorboys ex-p, but I wish i would have gotten it as it seems to get decent reviews and for the $8 it was a good deal.

My guess is that the paint will take on the look of 3M PF, and you will lose the depth and reflectivity of NXT. If durability is your principal concern, then I'd stick with the PF.

You might consider using PF as you base coat, and then after it has cured properly (12 hours?), top it with a wax/sealant that will give you the look you want. The conventional wisdom states that the most durable sealant should go on the bottom.

3M says (it's on the bottle) NOT to let the product haze. They have a instruction video on the 3m website that says apply, to a panel, and take it right off. One panel at a time. I just got it a minute ago, I'm sick today, trying to decide if I have the energy to wash my car and put this on.

Since NXT has a "bit" of "cleaning" ability, and PF lasts longer, I was thinking PF on top hoping it will lock in the look of NXT. PF does claim "ultimate deep gloss finish"....due to lack of reviews, and I seem to be the first one trying this, hoping to get lucky.

Check this thread in a few hours guys! I'LL BE BACK!....unless I get sick again washing the car

                      NOTES:
it's been not quite a week since I last put NXT 2.0 on the Mazda6, so it's not "fresh" but the car hasn't seen anything but a think fog and dust, so it should have plenty of life left. I'll take a picture after I do half of the hood, and post it up. so half will be just NXT, half NXT/PF

Welcome to the MOL forum and sorry about the tight editing restrictions, we've had a problem in the past with members purposefully editing and deleting their posts for destructive reasons which in-turns makes the thread confusing or useless and causes harm to the forum in general.

The limit was 30 minutes but I just bumped it up to 60 minutes, so if you want to make a change to something you posted you have an hour to do so, otherwise just make a new reply.

As for applying one wax over another wax, we wrote an article about this about 4 years ago and it's still just as accurate today as it was back then.

It's in a forum group we call How To Articles

We keep this on the forum homepage so the forum groups "Hot Topics" and "How To Articles" are easily clickable to... lots of good information in them...

Judging from the info on 3M performance finish, it seems to be an ideal topper (non cleaning)wax. It should be fine over NXT 2.0.

To be honest, I tried topping NXT a couple times and i did not see any difference really.

But you certainly could try it and see what results you get.

The suggested test in this thread,

Topping NXT aka "How to top one type of wax with a different type of wax

will tell you if you're second choice is improving or dulling down the final results. Don't know if appearance is as important as protection to you but that's the point of the above article. It explains why you should test and then how to do the test instead of doing what most people do before reading the article which is to apply the second product to the entire car without testing. When you do it this latter way, you don't know if your second coat improved or diminished the results from the first product.
