  • Stain / Film on my roof

    Hi All,

I hope this is the correct section to post this question in..

I Went for a car wash last night, and noticed this on my roof when I got back. It does not seem to want to come off. It almost disappears when wet, but then comes back when dry.

I live in Toronto, so I can't use any products that require warm temp. 80% of the time the car is sitting in my underground garage (condo) as I walk to work.

I am guessing it is a water stain or bird droppings.

Is your paint single stage or clear coat? If it's CC, it might be clear coat failure. Looks a lot what I started seeing on my 1993 Civic a couple of years ago when it's clear coat started to fail.

Have you Tried Ultimate Compound or m105 on it yet?

I am not sure. It is a stock 2003 350z which i purchased in Nov 2008. What is clear coat failure? Would it have been caused by the car wash?

I haven't tried any products yet. It is still pretty chilly here in Toronto.

How to check for a clear coat finish?

If you mean an automated car wash, it's possible but not likely. There are several factors that could cause clear coat failure, but it might be more on the owner than a car wash. If the car was constantly parked outside and the finish received only minimal care (washings and an occasional wax), the paint might have "dried out" or lost it's lubricity. Or it could be the quality of the paint itself, although I would guess that Nissan would use a high quality paint on the 350z. In other words, CC failure happens over time and probably would not caused by a single event like a car wash, although the car wash might have triggered an appearance of what was already occurring with the paint.

I also think that it is clear coat failure.

Did you just notice this for the first time after the wash? For me it's kind of tough to immediately call that clear coat failure. When you run your hand across the damage can you feel it or does it appear to be under / within the clear coat? And this is only on the roof of your car?

Yeah, doesn't necessarily strike me as CC failure.

Any chance of a more zoomed out pic? Something of the whole area?

I just noticed it after the wash. It was in the showroom in Nov when I bought it, and I like to think I would have noticed this even in the early stage. The area feels rough when I run my hand across. Yes, it is only on the roof.

To me, that doesn't really look like clearcoat failure. I've had CC failure on my TA and it looked very cloudy, but this almost has a greeenish tint to it....like a chemical or something?

I would also be interested to know if you can feel anything by rubbing your hand over it. Also, it seems strange the blemish stops at the rubber piece on the roof.
