Not sure if tire shine would work as well... esp not on something you will be touching a lot.

Is there any independant lab that rates all waxes! there sure seems to be a lot of hype and there are more brands that claim to be the best than Carter's makes liver pills! How do you seperate the fact form the fiction!!

        Mascheck-

I noticed you have a lot of questions, and that is great, as we like to answer questions on MOL, but it would be best if you created a separate thread for each of your unique questions and posted them in the Detailing 101 sub-forum. This will help to keep thread on topic, and make sure you get thorough answers.

Also, it appears that you are typing your posts in Microsoft Word with about a size 72 font...could you please try writing your posts in the provided website to avoid code problems and improper text styles?

        Thanks!

          Dan,

Meguiar's doesn't teach layering as is done on other forums for other products. You only need to apply one coat of wax or paint sealant and do a really good job and if you do a good job then that is sufficient.

Meguiar's recommends 2 applications as an option for,

          * Uniform coverage
          * Uniform appearance

Your first post on this forum was a question tagged onto someone else's thread, I moved your post out of that thread and created your very own Dedicated Thread and put it in the Detailing 101 forum. Here it is and the answer to your questions about working with pictures on discussions forums are answered already in that thread.

                Re: What's the best wax?

But then you are telling me there is no independent lab that tests all these products for durability and shine! Testing all the products on you own with all the hype in the market would take forever! Have you ever walked into an auto store and counted the number of competing products? You would think someone like Consumer Reports would ferret out the information! The other problem is knowing if the product harms your paint? I have a high dollar lacquer paint job and I sure don't want to hurt it even though it's old!

                Thanks,

                Dan

I'll refer you back to my earlier post in this thread: it was in fact Consumer Reports that did the test whereby they stated that their top picks scratched dark colors. I don't know about you, but this is not the kind of "independent test" I would put a lot of stock in.

As for any wax harming your paint - no product from a reputable, well known manufacturer such as Meguiar's, Mother's, Zaino, Pinnacle, P21S and others discussed here and other forums like Autopia or Detailing World is going to harm your paint if used properly. And proper use is the key here - if your paint is fairly delicate and you use an old sock to apply your wax in an aggressive manner, then odds are you're going to mar your paint. But it will be the old sock that causes the marring, not the wax. And if you think the "old sock" as an applicator is a joke, you need to talk to more people! It's amazing how many people actually do this sort of thing and then want to blame the product they used instead of the applicator. Happens all the time.

                    Re: What's the best wax?

Dan, if you have not already done so, please read through this article: Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle. If you take this article to heart, you will be able to make your vehicle look better than you ever expected. Finding a good wax is the easiest aspect of the detailing challenge. There are plenty of good waxes out there, and of those that are offered over-the-counter, Meguiar's has some of the best. You cannot go wrong with NXT Tech Wax, for example, which is the overwhelming favorite here on MOL.

But before you slap on a coat of wax, you need to properly prepare the paint surface. This means, first, learning good washing technique, so you are not putting new scratches and swirls into the paint. See this video:

How to Wash Your Car Show Car Style

Secondly, it means learning how to clay your car, which needs to be done at least once or twice a year, depending on the exposure of your vehicle to the elements. See this video:

                    How to Claybar Your Car

Third, it means applying a paint cleaner to your car a couple of times a year. Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner or Cleaner Wax would be good products for you.

Fourth, given that your vehicle has single-stage paint, it may benefit greatly from the application of a pure polish before the application of the wax. Deep Crystal Polish would be a good choice.

Keep it simple and keep it fun.

                    Cheers,
                    Al

                      Re: What's the best wax?

Skimming through the threads, durability of waxes is dependent of the conditions of the outside conditions, whether the car is garaged or not, harsh soaps to wash the car, surface preparation.

The five step is a great starting point and you have to pick your wax and how it looks on your car. I generally wax my cars every 3 months weather pending

The waxes I use are: NXT 2.0, M21, M26, M16, Gold Class and have used ColorX a time or two and the Cleaner Wax. I have M19 but haven't used it yet.

The whole line of Meguiar's waxes are great waxes and proper surface preparation is the key. Using the correct car wash is also key. If you use dish soap to wash your car, then the wax you put on will be stripped as with other harsh soaps. I use Gold Class soap or NXT car soap. The Detailer Line and Mirror Glaze line work very too.

                      Have fun.

Meguiar's has been around as long and in most cases, longer than any other car polish company you can probably name and we have a stellar reputation of creating products that maintain and showcase all types of paint systems. We made product for the early lacquers and we make products for all the hi-tech paints.

The pinnacle of car shows is the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, and more cars that win "Best of Class", and "Best of Show" use Meguiar's than any other brand for as long as records have been kept. This is just one example of the excellence in Meguiar's products albeit a very coveted example.

If you post the link to any website where you have pictures of your trucks or cars, one of us can easily click over there and insert your pictures into this thread, just reply to this thread with the link.

Also, what wax or paint sealant are you currently using on your high dollar lacquer paint job?

                          Re: What's the best wax?

The best wax is the one that looks good in your eyes, and protects your vehicle from a multitude of elements, that would be harmful to your finish. You really can't go wrong with any wax from an established wax company (ie. Meguiar's.)
