  • Multi-Step Product Selection question

I made the mistake of estimating the cut of the new Ultimate Compound as being a light/fine cut compound/polish, as if it was an all-in-one prep/cleaner. Unfortunately I've found its actually a pretty aggressive cut and I've got a gloss black paint job that is showing a (very very light) haze from the compound.

(I'm using a DA for application)

So now I want to go over it with a polish to get the haze out and get it back to show-quality gloss, but I'm under a time constraint and limited to what I can find at my local store. I'm pretty sure they have the 'Deep Crystal' polish, along with possibly the 'Mirror Glaze #9 - Swirl Remover' cleaner/polish.

Which of those would be better for a polishing step, using a DA polisher? What other ones, that might be carried at a store, should I keep an eye out for instead?

I plan to apply either NXT2 or Gold Class for a final wax, not sure how they will work on top of the polish, any recommendations there either?

    Thank you in advance!

    Re: Multi-Step Product Selection question

Yeah, it meant ultimate. Just to be sure, you mean the #105 correct?

#105 is designed to work with #205 Finishing polish as kind of a system. That would be best.

DC#2 is a pure polish with no cleaning ability. I would think you would have to at least use #9, which is a very mild cleaner/polish, to remove the haze. #80 Speed Glaze is a bit stronger of a cleaner/polish than the #9, so that is also a possibility.

You will be fine with either wax over either polish.

Not #105, its the consumer "Ultimate Compound".

The haze is so fine that I thought a polish would be sufficient, I will look for #9 first and if I cannot find it I will go with DC#2.

      Thanks for the reply!

I'm using the new consumer "Ultimate Compound", not #105.

The haze is so fine, that I figured a pure polish would be able to handle it, but #9 looks good, so I will probably try to get that first, else the DC#2.

        Thanks for the reply!

Go for the SwirlX instead, it's the perfect follow-up companion for Ultimate Compound when Ultimate Compound doesn't finish out LSP ready.

Did you use the Ultimate Compound over the entire car or was this just to a Test Spot?

Mike, I used UC on the Hood, Roof, A,B,C Pillars and some of the other horizontal problem areas that showed the worst in harsh light. Using a florescent lamp I can see a light haze on those areas versus non-compounded areas (the discrepancy remains even after applying wax)

The SwirlX is nowhere to be found by me, looked at a PepBoys and Autozone. It also still looks a bit too harsh to remove this ultra-fine compounding haze, but maybe not...

If you can't find SwirlX, ColorX might work if the haze is as fine as you indicate.

Assuming you used a polishing pad with the UC, you could also try UC on a finishing pad. Just make sure to do a small test spot first.

DC2 ain't going to accomplish what you want, namely, the removal of micro-marring. It's a pure polish with no cut. It might temporarily hide the hazing, but it won't remove it. SwirlX, M205, M09, and ColorX are probably your best candidates.

                  Re: Multi-Step Product Selection question

You need something light in it's cleaning and polishing ability, SwirlX won't be to aggressive for what you want, maybe call Customer Care and they may be able to help you locate a bottle.

Here ares some other products you can try that are light cleaners,

                  ColorX
                  Original ScratchX
                  Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
                  M09 Swirl Remover 2.0
                  M82 Swirl Free Polish

Give any of the above a try to a small area and see if it's working to your satisfaction.

Pure Polish will not work with your problem,

                    Try:

                    SwirlX, M205, M09, ColorX, ScratchX 1.0, DC1 (not 2)

That's all I can think of

                      Re: Multi-Step Product Selection question

Hi again everyone, I ended up picking up a bottle of ColorX - it is awesome. I had to hit some of the areas that had alot of compounding done twice with the ColorX but I also used it on the entire vehicle, and followed up with NXT2 and that black paint looks absolutely stunning!

I imagine SwirlX had a bit more 'punch' then ColorX and I probably wouldn't have had to hit the trouble areas twice with it, but in the end the ColorX worked well on my DA.

I think in the future the Ultimate Compound will be put on the shelf only for the 'in-case of emergency' situations, it is quite a bit harsher then I thought it would be.

In fact I wanted to ask, how do the three products listed below rank in order of 'aggressiveness' ?

                        ColorX
                        SwirlX
                        DC#1

Great news on the ColorX. I'm glad you were able to restore your paint.

                          From least to most aggressive:

                          DC1
                          ColorX
                          SwirlX

Thanks akimel - that was what I was thinking, I probably should have used SwirlX but in the end the ColorX got the job done. If I was doing it by hand, the ColorX wouldn't have been aggressive enough, considering I did two applications with a DA just to get the haze out.
