  • Winter Washing Videos

Hi, guys. I came across these videos this morning. I'd like to ask those of you who avail yourselves of coin-op washing during the harsh winter months to please watch these videos and evaluate them for all of us.

    Part 1:

    Part 2:

    Part 3:

Are these videos good enough to be included in my list of internet resources?

While I will give him credit for using the grit guard and spraying out the brush before hand, there is no way I would still use a car wash brush. I would rather bring my own brush and bucket.

I wish we had a carwash around like that, especially with the foam gun. No carwash like that locally.

I live in So. Cal, so I don't need to go to a coin-op car wash. That being said, I thought he did a professional and well done demonstration. I think his methods probably didn't induce any (or very few) new swirls.

I think this video series is worthy of being added to your links.

I was cool, but he did make mistakes.
He was basically just used the foam on his truck, and not his water.
He also did not rinse the brush off enough.
But his videos are normally pretty good.
          Plus he beat Phil Bohler.

I think he does a good job of explaining techniques to wash your car at a coin op. The only thing I disagree with is that he waits to rinse off the car till he has soaped up the car entirely. I rinse each section of the car right after using the soap and brush on it.
            What does everyone else do?

I wash the whole car then rinse.
This way when I dry, I dry the whole car at a time, instead of section by section so when I rinse I do not get the other sections wet.

i wash/rinse in sections. Then I respray the entire car if some areas start to dry, then hose off for sheeting then dry

the first video bored me to death then he gets a brush out!, i would have probably safely washed my car 2BM in that time. Just to remind anyone what one incorrect wash can do please see the below link

The wife brought the audi to get washed today. She thought she was doing the right thing as it was dirty but oh how wrong it was..... I arrived home tonight and was greeted by this!!!! :'( Guess what I will be doing tomorrow now.....

                        Re: Winter Washing Videos

Thought it was a pretty decent video, but VERY weather contingent. When I woke up this morning it was -1 F. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY should be washing their car in that weather, unless they have a heated garage.

The reality is, he did a reasonable job, in weather which permitted it but I would not use the brush he used, nor would I rely upon the car wash soap/foam. Who knows what it is.

Could be dish soap or some chemical which strips everything off the paint. I also thought his engine cleaning was a bit hap hazard (said from the guy who does the laziest engine cleaning on the planet).

My only points of contention with the video are:
                          1) during the engine cleaning he used a high pressure spray, whereas I will only use the low pressure setting( for me better safe than sorry, let the APC, Gunk, or whatever chemicals do the trick, water is just a medium to remove the chemicals)
                          2) Whether boars hair or not, I go nowhere near the brush.
Outside of those two points, the video was very well done.

                            Re: Winter Washing Videos

oh man that brush has got to kill the paint. I havent used a coin op in while but when i did there were some that had unlimited time for $5.00, so i would bring my buckets and mit and kept the pressure washer going til i was done.

                              Re: Winter Washing Videos

I'd never use the techniques that were used in the videos.

I've been using coin-ops since the early 1960's. I would never consider using the car wash's foam brush on the body of any of my "daily drivers". Only recently have I used a brush at all and then I am darn careful. Same is true of a California waterblade.

I would never let the soap remain on the finish. I do the whole car/truck and then rinse immediately.

After all of these years of using coin-ops I have finally come up with a sort of safe method that doesn't take all that long. Blast off the big stuff using the coin-op soap and rinse and then follow up with QEW or ONR either at the car wash or at home.

Save the engine washing for warm weather and then do it very carefully.

IMO there was lots on "not so good" advice offered in these videos.

Oh, rarely do I use a coin-op when the temperature is below freezing unless it is enclosed and there are darn few of those.

                              Tom
