Just painted my car today !!!

I just painted my car today. It looks great. I used a single stage urethane (Nason). It's a factory color, burgundy with a lot of gold metallic. I was so happy with the color I went ahead and shot some clear on top of the single stage. I did this paint job in my back yard. So I have a few bugs and dirt specks to deal with. I wouldlike to hear some professional detailer tips? I won't wash this car for about a week. After about 4 to 6 weeks I was thinking about taking a clay bar to it. Then waxing it with NXT and maybe top it with some # 16 that I have stashed.

How many coats of clear and what size fluid tip and did you use HVLP?

Min wait time b4 wax is 90 days the solvent needs time to escape.

I'm not for sure but I think the tip is 1.4mm. It is a HVLP gun. I did one light coat of etching primer, 2 coats of single stage urethane, 2 coats of clear urethane on vertical panels (doors), 3 coats of the clear on horizontal panels (hood, roof, and trunk lid).

Clay is not really for removing things stuck in the paint like dirt that landed in the paint when it was still wet.

Clay can be used for overspray or dry spray which tends to land on everything when painting outside.

Might want to sand out the dirt and dust specs and then compound and polish the paint.

Where is the car going to be kept for the next 30 or days? Inside a garage or parked outside all the time?

Is this also your daily driver?

This car is a daily driver that is kept outside. Cars that I have previously painted that had some dirt or bug specks wash out pretty nicely after about month. So in about 4 to 6 weeks I'll see how bad the specks are then. If it is still bad I'll break out the sand paper and bother you guys for wet sanding tips. In about a week or two I'll start washing it by hand. Which car wash would be better? Gold Class or NXT wash ??? I am going to try to keep the driving of this car to a bare minimum. The weather forecast here in San Antonio looks pretty good for the next week, Sunny/partly cloudy, no rain, and slight wind.

Either Gold Class or NXT car wash soap would be fine. It all really comes down to personal preference. I have used both and have stuck with Gold Class. It is just my own personal preference though.

Sorry I just now got a chance to post some pictures of my car.

I kept running low on air and had to adjust my gun as I sprayed. So the metalic came out kinda "blotchy" in some spots. There are some dirt and bug particles stuck in the paint.

For $140 worth of paint. Nason brand single stage urethane with a few top coats of dupont chroma clear.

These pictures are kinda rough and I have yet to wash the car. So it's kinda of dusty.

How much time did you have in the WHOLE process?

Nice work/dedication.

Right now it's better just to keep a car and fix rather than losing thousands (some lose tens of thousands) when you buy a new one.

Isn't that always true? Don't get me wrong, I like new cars...but you are 99% guaranteed to take a bath on a new car once you drive it off the lot.

From cleaning, removing some trim, sanding, masking, and actual spraying it took about 6 hours.

It's not perfect. I should have paid the $100 to rent a booth for a day.

For $130 to $140 dollar urethane paint job, with clear, it's not too bad.

I have a friend who does really good wet sanding / buffing work. I will probably just pay him to do the work since he has the tools and experience.

First of all Junkyard, phenomenal job; definitely improved the appearance and value of the car!

I do have a question for you, and just about all who have been following this:

Why did you go with the clear?

I am asking because I am looking to do the same to my car soon, and I am just trying to glean whatever knowledge I can from others' experiences.
