  • Please help me before I sell my new car! (rail dust/rust bloom/fallout issues)

OK, now that I have your attention, allow me to introduce myself. I am new user from Alameda, CA (Bay Area). I own a 2008 Toyota Urban Runner 4x4 in titanium, a 2006 Mustang GT in tungsten gray and a 1986 Mustang GT in white over gray. I am meticulous about my vehicles and I need some advice on my 4Runner...

I purchased the 4Runner in August of this year. Everything was great for a couple of weeks and before I could put a coat of sealant on the paint, I noticed that small rust colored spots appeared everywhere including the headlights and glass. Long story short, I figured it was rail dust and clayed it myself. Well, it all come back within another two weeks. I decide that I had enough of claying it (6+ hours at a pop) and took it to my local dealer who outsourced it to a body-shop (without my knowledge). That's a whole different story but it came back with MOST of the spots gone and some nice scratches courtesy of the cord on what I believe was the orbital buffer. The swear the paint was "sealed" and nothing would penetrate it. Well guess what, it came right back! At this point I went all the way to Toyota corporate and got nowhere. They claim that it's "obviously environmental fallout" and they are not responsible. This despite me having two other light cars that did not have such issues. Fast forward to last weekend when I took the advice of a bodyshop and clayed the entire thing again, then used the following:

    Meguiar's #7 Showcar Glaze
    Meguiar's #26 Hi-Tech Yellow Wax
and for good measure a coat of Meguiar's NXT

You can probably guess the next sentence... after a week, IT'S BACK! Granted, it is easier to remove but washing alone does not get the "rust blooms" out. I had to wash and dry it the go over the paint with a just barely damp micro fiber towel. OK, so it's clean again but now what?

I live close (within 5 miles) of the port of Oakland, a railyard and planes fly over from time to time. I took a good look at my house and sure enough, the stuff is on the paint there as well. Now, I really am thinking of selling my 3 month old car to replace it with a darker color. The 4Runner is parked outside and this happens mainly when it's a very wet night from what I've noticed. It's never happened on any other of my vehicles including a white Ranger 4x4. Is this a problem with my 4Runner's paint? Is there a way to "seal" it once and for all? Anyone wanna buy a titanium 4Runner? ;-) THANKS in advance to all of the experts and weekend detailers out there! I truly have never been so frustrated with a car problem in my life. The neighbors must think I'm crazy for messing with it all the time. (it sure is smooth tho after two complete clay jobs!)

Given your location its going to happen quite often. Or you could invest in a car cover for it. You can also post your situation to autotopia.org forums and see if maybe some other products might help.

Thx, Ohio. Good read through, I agree. A lot of the links are no longer valid tho. Plus, I can remove the contamination with the best of 'em. I just can't seem to get the paint to seal so that it does not stick the next time 'round. I can't blame rail dust if the same spots are present on my house.

Thx, Aero. I thought about a car cover and it might just come to that. It's just not so practical when it's raining and you're trying to load your newborn at 6:30 AM. Plus, don't car covers cause scratches? I can't imagine draping a heavy cloth cover over a car that I've been driving all week. I guess my biggest frustration is why this paint let's the spots in but my previous vehicles did not.

Yes, car covers can cause scratches. Anytime anything touches the paint it *can* scratch it. Using a car cover on a car that gets driven everyday and parked outside every night is probably not real practical for the reasons you already stated. Since you didn't see this on your previous light colored cars exposed to the same conditions I am not convinced that it's a reoccurring issue. What clay are you using? I have a white car that gets small rust colored spots from the mag chloride they use on the roads up here in the winter...and I don't drive my car in the winter. It sits in my garage. The stuff just blows around and gets on the car anyway.

Is it possible that it's rail dust that you are not fully removing? You could just be removing the rust color from the dust but not fully removing it. Then in a few days it oxidizes and you see the rust color again. I have clayed cars covered in over spray the go from rough to smooth feeling...but the over spray is still on the car. It gets down in the pores (that's my best guess anyway) and claying with a mild clay makes the area smooth to the touch but doesn't full remove it. I have had to go to aggressive clay and use a lot of rubbing and time to get it to go away completely.

Do you own a machine polisher? If you don't then you may just have to live with the spots for now. ASSuming I'm right about aggressive clay removing the spots for good. The aggressive clay tends to leave some marring that takes a machine to remove. That may change once the new consumer products come out (ultimate compound, ScratchX2.0, SwirlX). Any chance you can capture the spots with your camera and post a pic? 1000 words as they say.

And no, as of right now their is no product that will 100% seal the paint on your car.

If you are convinced that you are getting it off and it's coming back then try using some quick detailer and a microfiber. It's easy enough to use that it should only add 10-15 minutes to your wash routine.

                  Interesting....

Wonder what's floating around in the air where you live?

Do any of your neighbors have this issue with their cars?

If this problem is happening to the paint on your house and on your 4Runner it seems like it would be happening to all the cars exposed to the outdoors in this area...

What's it look like on your house?

Can you capture a picture of the problem both on your 4Runner and your house?

You definitely have some nasty things in the air around your house. I think get your suv in the best shape possible and then start using a car cover. It would be interesting to see if your neighbors are having the same issues as you are.

I only found one link that didn't work, this one...
                      Alkaline Neutralizer
The second step of our Neutralization System, Alkaline Neutralizer deep cleans painted surfaces to remove Alkaline Deposits. Also dissolves ferrous metal particles while breaking their bond to the paint so that they safely and easily float away.

I'll backtrack the URL and fix it. Just to note this is the fault of the owner of that website as when we posted the link it did work.
