OK, now that I have your attention, allow me to introduce myself. I am new user from Alameda, CA (Bay Area). I own a 2008 Toyota Urban Runner 4x4 in titanium, a 2006 Mustang GT in tungsten gray and a 1986 Mustang GT in white over gray. I am meticulous about my vehicles and I need some advice on my 4Runner...
I purchased the 4Runner in August of this year. Everything was great for a couple of weeks and before I could put a coat of sealant on the paint, I noticed that small rust colored spots appeared everywhere including the headlights and glass. Long story short, I figured it was rail dust and clayed it myself. Well, it all come back within another two weeks. I decide that I had enough of claying it (6+ hours at a pop) and took it to my local dealer who outsourced it to a body-shop (without my knowledge). That's a whole different story but it came back with MOST of the spots gone and some nice scratches courtesy of the cord on what I believe was the orbital buffer. The swear the paint was "sealed" and nothing would penetrate it. Well guess what, it came right back! At this point I went all the way to Toyota corporate and got nowhere. They claim that it's "obviously environmental fallout" and they are not responsible. This despite me having two other light cars that did not have such issues. Fast forward to last weekend when I took the advice of a bodyshop and clayed the entire thing again, then used the following:
Meguiar's #7 Showcar Glaze
Meguiar's #26 Hi-Tech Yellow Wax
and for good measure a coat of Meguiar's NXT
You can probably guess the next sentence... after a week, IT'S BACK! Granted, it is easier to remove but washing alone does not get the "rust blooms" out. I had to wash and dry it the go over the paint with a just barely damp micro fiber towel. OK, so it's clean again but now what?
I live close (within 5 miles) of the port of Oakland, a railyard and planes fly over from time to time. I took a good look at my house and sure enough, the stuff is on the paint there as well. Now, I really am thinking of selling my 3 month old car to replace it with a darker color. The 4Runner is parked outside and this happens mainly when it's a very wet night from what I've noticed. It's never happened on any other of my vehicles including a white Ranger 4x4. Is this a problem with my 4Runner's paint? Is there a way to "seal" it once and for all? Anyone wanna buy a titanium 4Runner? ;-) THANKS in advance to all of the experts and weekend detailers out there! I truly have never been so frustrated with a car problem in my life. The neighbors must think I'm crazy for messing with it all the time. (it sure is smooth tho after two complete clay jobs!)
