    Re: Heater question...

I just noticed your from GA. How cold does it get by you? I'm sure me heating my garage in WI and you and GA are totally different requirements. Maybe the electric heater would work if you only need a little heat.

Well, right now for example it's in the high 40's at night and the garage is about 20-25 degree's warmer then outside. It's a brand new house with an attached garage so it's insulated pretty well. It's only the end of Oct. though and as it will not get as cold as it does in WI we do get some nights where the temp. drops into the 20's but thats not too often. Usually in the middle of winter it'll be in the 30's at night which means my garage will be in the 50's. So, yeah I probably don't need anything as powerful as you guys up north use.

I was looking at this Farenheat portable 4000 watt heater. I'm in Nashville, TN and it can get down to single digits in the winter, but most likley it will hover in the teens for a couple weeks.

The only downside I see about this heater is that it needs a 220v plug

Since I have a detached garage and would require either a gas line or a larger electric line to have the kind of heat I would really like, I took the cheap way out.
I have a portable torpedo style 90,000 BTU Reddy Heater kerosene heater. Noisy, a little smelly, but not too bad on either count. It will raise the temperature in my uninsulated 24' x 32' garage 20 to 30 degrees in about 15 minutes. Had the same heater for almost 30 years.
They probably are close to $300 today. A similar heater is avaiable for use with propane.
It looks a lot like this one, but not exactly the same.

Just a quick safety tip when using this style of portable heater. I suggest opening you large vehicle garage door about 2-4 inches and blocking it open while it is running. These heaters produce carbonmonoxide that will kill if not allowed to be released from the garage in question. I forgot to do this once walked into the garage after about 2 hours of the heater running and instant headache and dizziness. I was able to get out without a problem and opened the garage door to vent. Just remember safety first you only have one life.

I was just curious, how long do you think you can run that heater on the 100lb propane tank?

            Thanks
            Thanks!

They guy told me with a well insulated garage it should last all winter. I will let you know in the sprig if he was right.

I plan to keep it at 45 when I'm not working in there. The one in my attached garage will kick in every 20-30 minutes when I have it set at 65-70, but I don't think it is insulated as well and my detached garage.

Another option would be to store my products in the house and then only heat the garage when I'm in it. I'm just too lazy to move all my stuff.

Here is the unit in my other garage. I like the idea of natural gas better but it would have been too much work to run a line to my other garage.

This unit came with the house when I purchased it.

That's pretty much the only way I can go unless I get a huge propane tank (all new houses in GA are full electric). What do you guys thing about those long electric heaters that go on the floor along the baseboard? I've seen older houses with those type of heaters. I wonder if like 2-3 of those would the the job in a 2 car garage.
I did this for the first two winters. It never got real warm, but warm enough to work (55-60). The clay bars sure do get stiff in the cold.

                Good point!
I'm not sure if the heater actually produces carbon monoxide or if it just consumes the oxygen in the closed space. Either way, it can be a bad thing.
The heater comes with safety warnings about using it in closed spaces, but a lot of people never read the instructions.
I open my entrance door about 6" while I am running the heater.

                  RaskyR1,

Did you figure out how much propane you ended up going through in one years time with the heater? Did you have to get the 100lb tank refilled?

                  Thanks
