  • Heater question...

Since winter is just around the corner and in some parts of the country it seems like it's already here, I thought I would put this out there. As we all know the surface temperature needs to be between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit for best results when using Meguiars products. So, with that said how do you guys keep your garage at the appropriate temperature for detailing? Please list brand names, models etc of any heaters you're using.

Radient heat panels on the ceiling of the garage.

        I betcha it's a whole bunch.

Since I have a detached garage and would require either a gas line or a larger electric line to have the kind of heat I would really like, I took the cheap way out.
I have a portable torpedo style 90,000 BTU Reddy Heater kerosene heater. Noisy, a little smelly, but not too bad on either count. It will raise the temperature in my uninsulated 24' x 32' garage 20 to 30 degrees in about 15 minutes. Had the same heater for almost 30 years.
They probably are close to $300 today. A similar heater is avaiable for use with propane.
It looks a lot like this one, but not exactly the same.

          Hey Andrew,

I picked up this heater at Northern Tool for like $400. Works like a champ!

I have a natural gas ceiling mounted one and I love it. Works perfect for me. My garage is a bit bigger than a 2 stall, the heater is a 45,000 btu.

Mine is a different brand but basically the same as this one... Mr. Heater Natural Gas Garage Heater — 45,000 BTU

Any questions just let me know!

Edit: Rasky, great minds think alike! lol

I also have a HOT DOG brand one in my other garage that runs on natural gas. Since my shop is in the detatched garage it runs on propane. I have a 100lb tank out back.

I have a natural sun heater in my area. You open the garage and let the 70 degree weather pour in. It gets a little expensive, but it works.

Sorry, I had to do it...

The weather said it could snow here this weekend. Looks like a low of 28 F on Monday night.

Northern Tool has a couple nice electric heaters, glad Rasky mentioned the name. There is one on their site for $109 with really good reviews. I might have to get one for the new garage. My neighbors garage did have radiant panels on the garage ceiling. This was to keep the temp constant in the garage, as well as the living room above it. Very nice, although expensive I'm sure.

                        RaskyR1, nice setup.

I was just curious, how long do you think you can run that heater on the 100lb propane tank?

                        Thanks

Yeah, I was looking on their website (Northern Tool) last night and they have a whole bunch of electric heaters. That's pretty much the only way I can go unless I get a huge propane tank (all new houses in GA are full electric). What do you guys thing about those long electric heaters that go on the floor along the baseboard? I've seen older houses with those type of heaters. I wonder if like 2-3 of those would the the job in a 2 car garage.

I used one of those electric heaters in my one stall apartment garage. It was fully insulated. After a couple of hours running it, it was 5 degs warmer. I would say don't waste your time.

Check out something like this then... Mr. Heater Portable Propane Forced Air Heater It will run right off of a 25lb tank like a gas grill uses. My parents have one and we've heated up their uninsulated 2 stall garage pretty good with it.
