To give you an idea of your choices, take a look at this thread and poll:

I really like my Makita. It's very comfortable to use and has never given me any problems.

There are a number of other good choices, too. The DeWalt 849 is super reliable and used by tons and tons of daily detailers.

Many others use the Metabo because of its light weight, smaller size, and power. But, all these extra features come at a higher price.

If you can, check out some of the deals on eBay. I've bought two Makitas and some others have bought DeWalts off there without a problem.

I've used my Makita on a daily basis for the past four years. I took it to a Makita certified repair man about two years ago, it needed a good deep cleaning and a new cord. Besides that it has been good to me. Decent weight, nice rpm range with scale, cool D handle, doesn't chatter or howl. Started with a shop Dewalt but got the itch and bought my own. Ask a tool or product dealer to bring a few so you can see how they feel in your hands.

I started with a Porter Cable rotary but it died 6 months after I bought it. Picked up a Makita 9227c and haven't looked back.

I hear that "Coastal Tool" has a pretty slick deal with a bag and the lowest price around on the Makita

                      Hitachi

                      Makita

We have 3 of each, and find them equal and 'interchangeable'.

We highly recommend Meguiar's backing plates and 6" pads.

                      Good Luck.

The Hitachi goes up to 3400 rpms and the Makita - 3000 rpms.
What is that extra 400 rpms for?
                        Will i ever need it?
