  • Wheel Care

I'm trying to develop a system of day-to-day cleaning for my new Honda Civic EX's alloy wheels. So I wanted to ask for your advice. I plan on wiping down the wheels every day or 2 to prevent them from getting dirt caked on them. What should I use to wipe them off? I just used a little applicator today for a 1 time thing and I didn't even have to use a chemical, I could just wipe the dirt right off.

Do you recommend a microfiber or Terry towel or what? And then, once I've used this towel, how should I clean it? Is it safe to throw a towel full of wheel filth into the washing machine? Should I separate it from clothing?

In addition to the day-to-day stuff, when I actually wash the car, what tools and chemicals do you recommend using for the wheels and tires? I saw this Mothers tire/wheel brush pack thing online but I'd prefer if I could buy the stuff in a physical store so I don't have to pay big shipping fees.

Throw your tips my way please. Thanks!

    Re: Wheel Care

Dedicate some wiping cloths just for your wheels and wash them by themselves and use this...

Quik Wheel Detailer® Mist & Wipe

Meguiar’s Quik Wheel Detailer® is the fastest way to quickly clean and shine your wheels without soap and water! Removes light brake dust and other road contaminants before they have a chance to cling to your wheel surface. This safe, high lubricity formula lifts off dirt and grime without scratching and build-up. And unlike traditional wheel cleaners, Quik Wheel Detailer is a waterless cleaner that eliminates the hassle of dragging out the water hose in between washes.

That is the prescription I use on my wheels and I could not be happier with the results.

Thanks Mike. One question I have is what clothes do you recommend to clean the wheels? Will any Terry cloth or towel do or should I get a microfiber towel? What is easiest on the wheels but will get the dirt off? Thanks.

          Re: Wheel Care

I first try cleaning with regular wash soap, towels, various brushes and sponges. I use MF towels and old 100% cotton bath towels. If the wheels need more cleaning I go with a wheel cleaner (Meg all wheel clean or such) or an APC. After it is cleaned I will put a sealant on them, I like FK1 Hi Temp for this.
