The reason the rag turned black is they were dirty. You may want to get a bottle of Hot Rims Chrome wheel cleaner and scrub those babies then try the Hot Rims Chrome Polish. I once ran into a wheel I thought was uncoated, they were scrubbed too! Turned applicator black and everything, then the black stopped! They ended up being coated aluminum. I was happy I didn't try all wheels, just the one. They cleaned up nice and I used ColorX on them.

Give nxt all metal polysh a try, you'll love it! If you haven't already tried it?

Also M105 would be great for those rims and will help remove some of those finer scratches and give a nice shine. And also a mothers or flitz ball will help you alot. (the flitz is better to use as a cleaner step because of it's fiber material and the mothers for it's foam for the polishing)

Don't forget about #20 does a fantastic job on chrome and since it's a sealant gives great protection, I use it on my chrome ponys once a month and they look great and no brake dust at all.
