Re: M83, ShowCar Glaze #7 good combo??????

Thanks for some really good advice. I have helped a buddy of mine, Dino, wet sand several cars in the past, even used a rotary....but that was many moons ago!

I've uploaded some more photos , close ups of the SLK hood and trunk. The car is dirty right now, but i think you can get a pretty good idea of whats going on with the paint....taken in garage, so you can't really see the swirls, but you can see the "dimples" in the paint. The shop that did this really sucked, then they went out of business....this is after the second time they repainted it!!!

The first time the paint didn't even look black...more of a "brownish black"...hard to describe, but looked like a different color hood and trunk from the rest of my wife's car.

I 'm just trying to get it to look good again. I bought my wife this car for her 40th birthday two years ago. My wife was raised very poor, and for the first ten years of our marriage we were just average middle class. In 18 years of Marriage my wife has always dreamed of having a Mercedes convertible for herself. Now My wife has everything she ever dreamed of, but her car get wrecked by some jerks......just trying to restore her dream car. She thinks it looks good, but I know it's not perfect for her...she deserves way better.

I really appreciate all of the words of advice...you guys are a great bunch!!

I really don't want to get it repainted....not about the money...but the trust factor is gone from paint shops!

Tried some M80 tonight...not much luck. Very slight improvement..made three different passes with the LC white pad first, then tried the the Meguiars W8006 pad, no noticeable difference.

I sprayed both pads with QD lightly, used a larger quarter size "blob" and spread the polish on my working area. I first spread around 3-4, the worked it in 5-6 range to the polish broke down......three passes later, not much improvement

I'm going to try the 83 tomorrow night, see if that is better...I'll try the W8006 pad first, if that doesn't cut it...I'm pulling out the big guns, the L:C orange pad

Worked the #83 tonight and noticed an improvement. Paint still isn't where I want tit to be, but looking better...

83 is much harder to work with,,,got alot of dusting. I tried using small amount of product only (about the size of a nickel, up to a quarter) but I would still get dry spray...

I ended up having to spray the pad down with QD between passes and cleaning the pad ALOT. Not helping to the degree I thought it would......

It sounds like there is not enough product on the pad.

Take a look at this thread:

Unfortunately, those little brown dimples are fish eyes. These defects occur when the paint doesn't stick in that area or there was debri on the paint. Basically, there is something that prevented the paint from sticking.

The true solution is a repaint. You may be able to use some touch up paint and fill them in and wetsand them flat. However, this will really take some time.

Have you clayed those dots? It may be possible that dirt has filled in the spots.

            Bingo

If you read enough posts on this forum you'll start to see of pattern where M80 is almost always recommended to use before M83 not only because Meguiar's teaches people to use the least aggressive product to get the job done but because it's a lot easier product to work with and this is partly because it's oilier and thus buffs with a DA Polisher better with a much longer play time than the M83.

M83 is more aggressive this is true, but it's also harder to work with especially when you're first starting out and learning the way of the machine.

Anytime you have a problem working with a product, ours or theres, try cleaning your pad often and shrinking the size of your work area down, most people try to work to large of an area and with a non-aggressive tool like a DA Polisher you're not going to get good results. Bigger isn't better.

Took your PhotoBucket photo above and saved it to my hard drive and then cropped out this section.

From the picture, and this means we're handicapped from really seeing what's going on with the paint from our computer monitor, this looks like a bad repaint and it could be no amount of polishing with any company's pads or chemicals is going to improve it.

It may be possible with a rotary buffer to smooth the surface out and this would bring up the gloss and create more clear and distinctive reflections but there's always the risk that a lesser quality re-paint won't take a multi-step rotary buff out without running into further complications, it just depends upon how thick the film-build is you have to work with.

Might just have to do the best you can with the M80 and then go to wax or get some estimates for a quality paint job.

I even had Mike Chime in...Thanks Mike!

Porscheguy..the brown spot from the photos is just dust and pollen...hadn't washed the wifes car...just wanted to shoot off some pics...I'm pretty anal about using the clay bar every time I clean the car.

Mike, in my heart I know that you and everyone else who said it will need a repaint is right...Im just sick over it...first the car broke into and vandalized, then a body shop that did **** work...I'm just fed up. Trust level is zip, zero...I LOVE detailing cars ( my brother says I'm a bad catholic, that I'm breaking the first commandment I love clean cars so much!)

Would you try to have someone wet sand, then polish first before getting a repaint, or do you guys think it's beyond that????

Quick question not related to this car...M09 good for my Porsche??? seems milder than M80, my Porsche has only a few very fine swirls that is only visible under some lighting conditions, ...from it's photo in the post, or my avatar, it looks more like black glass....will M09 be less like to induce swirls????

Again, thanks everyone for all of your feedback..best detailing forum on the web!!!!!

Re: M83, ShowCar Glaze #7 good combo??????

Well I'm glad those are just dirt specs! ...quite a sigh of relief...

When you say dimples, I instantly think of fish eyes. Can you provide a macro picture of these dimples? Most cameras have a flower symbol on the dial that enables macro shots.

The other possibility could be that it is orange peel. If it is orange peel, it can be corrected. I don't want to undermine your skills, but I would try it myself - especially on this car.

Sure, M09 is perfectly fine for the Porsche. M09 is nice to have around for light swirls and micro marring.

As long as a Meguiar's cleaner/polish is used properly, they will not leave swirls. You may have some micro marring in extreme cases, but nothing else. Swirls or holograms only really become a factor when using the rotary with compounds, wool pads, etc.

                  Update: Update: Update:

Spent the weekend detailing my wife's SLK and my Boxster
My car from thte photos doesn't look much different, but in person...darker, like a pool of black ink.

My Wife's car isn't perfect, but WAY improved. I'm posting some photos for comparison!

                  Used 100% Meguiars!!

                  SLK:
                  Deep Cyrstal car wash
                  clay bar
                  wash again
M83 worked with PC 7424 and LC Orange pad
                  Wash
                  M80 applied with PC 7424 and Meg's W8006
                  M09 applied with PC 7424 and Meg's W9006
                  M07 applied by hand
                  NXT 2.0 applied by hand
Hot Shine’s™ high gloss tire dressing

Look at the photos earlier in the thread....HUGE improvement!!. I'm still out on the NXT. Even after two coats, looks "oily" Ilet it dry 24hr between coats, applied it thin, and 24 hours after the last coat light wiped her down with a microfiber and Ultimate quick detailer.

Here are a few of my Boxster:
Same detail except no #83, or #80. Used #09, #07 and NXT 2.0

                  God I LOVE MEGUIARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And everyone here has been great!!!!!!!
