  • Paint Defect?

I just finished washing and waxing a friend's red Mini. I use the same procedure; rinse, wash thoroughly, clay the entire exterior while still wet along with a spray of final detail. Then I wash again and dry.

When I dried the exterior, I noticed that the paint below the window on the rear hatch was rough. I know that I clayed that area, so I picked up scratchx and applied it to the affected area. No change; the paint still felt rough. I haven't included a picture since the defect can't be seen.

Is this a paint defect created in the factory? Opinions welcome!

Are you sure the area has not been repainted? Back when i worked at a dealership almost every car that came out of their body shop has really rough paint...

If its not been repainted then I would clay it again. Its possible something is on the door that didnt come off the first time.

No I didn't. I figured if scratchx didn't make a difference, claying wouldn't. And when I clayed the rest of the Mini, I found surface contaminants in the place you would suspect, such as on the doors near the tires, the roof and along the front of the car. I wouldn't expect to find a problem where i found it.

It all depends, clay a little more this area, and see if you get a smooth surface, if you do then you know that you had contaminants bonded in that area.

It's just a fast test that wouldn't take long, so give it a try and come back with the results (if you have any)
