  • Black Car Detailing Questions

    My father has a 2001 black colour car (original paint).

    His car got lots of swirl marks (spider-webs) on his paint because he uses the long handle brush to wash his car all the time. Therefore, I would like to bring his car back to the original paint before his b-day.

    So, the question is should I process the following steps for restoring the finish of the car:

    1) use #83 with the polishing pad to "clean-up" - speed "3" to remove most oxidation and contimination;

    2) use "Colour X" with polishing pad - speed "3" to bring back the shine and cove the minor swirl marks;

    3) Apply "Scratch X" to hide / remove the scratches that left over;

    4) Apply the NXT wax to seal all the captioned works;

    5) Go back to my house and cut the b-day cake

    I have just purchased the Hi-Tech wax (#26), should I use it in-between the process?

    Thanks.

    In my opinion, you can either keep the #26 on the shelf and use it a little farther down the road on a differen project or, you can use it as a final topper on the NXT. I would discourage using it before the NXT application.

    Also, just as a helpful hint, I'd apply two coats of NXT to ensure uniform coverage.

    Good luck and let us know how it turns out!!

      I am with Rp...

      On Black.... I like the look of NXT alone with 2 coats, check it out but if it were me I would stick with NXT alone on black. I get the best results with it... but #26 is still a great product!

        For me I would clay forst, then polish with the #83 set on 5 after that you should be looking pretty good, you can proceed with scratch x if you want to go to that "next" level but I have no experiance with scratch x. then apply your NXT and it should look AWESOME ! Maybe run th epc on 3 when using th enXT but 3 is too slow for #83 to properly do its job.
        If you dont play you CANT win!

          Hey,

          Well when it comes to black...I would take a slightly different approach.

          After claying the entire car, I would go around with the ScratchX by hand (before using the #83) looking for the deeper scratches and marring. While I realize that ScratchX is not as aggressive as #83 DACP, please let me explain my reasoning.

          When trying to eliminate isolated defects by hand, what often happens is that while the scratch may be eliminated, futher marring may have been added to the adjacent areas. True, if you are really careful, you may not get the marring.

          After eliminating the isolated defects, then go around the whole car with #83 DACP, a W-8006 Polishing Pad, and the PC set to speed 5. This will level the entire paint's surface. Be sure to REALLY work the product in by moving the buffer VERY slowly over a 2'x2' area. The product should be broken down to a light residue/dust, then remove with a quality MF towel.

          Now, on black paint, I like to use an intermediate step. I will now use #82 Swirl Free Polish and a W-9006 Finishing Pad. This step will help refine the surface even more by adding more depth and eliminating any micro-marring remaining from the #83 step. Work the product with the PC set to speed 4, and remove the product while still damp with another MF towel.

          Following the #82, I would then apply #81 Hand Polish or #7 Show Car Glaze with a clean W-9006 pad. No need to work the product in; just apply to a panel and remove.

          Now, top with 2 coats of NXT Tech Wax!!

          Please post some pics when done!!

            What is another alternative without #82 & #81? I did not order last time (as you know, I have to order these through Canada Meguiar, and none of 80's are in stock in any retail stores). At present, I have got #83, Colour X, NXT Techwax and #26.

            Can I use the stuffs that I have at this time to get a good look?

            Thanks.

              Hey,

              Yes, the products you have are very good products and will give you excellent results. The products I listed will provide that "little" extra.

              Where in Canada do you live? If you are out west, Lordco's carries most of the 80 series and will order what they do not have in stock.

                The city where Bill Clinton came here 2 weeks ago - - - Toronto, Ontario.

                So, there is no chance that I can use #83 and the rest of my products? Because, this is the only worst car (black) that I am dealing with. My other 2 cars are fine. I detail my car twice a week.

                  Hey,

                  Ah yes, I rememberr you mentioning Toronto before. There must be places in Toronto that carry the 80 series. Try the Yellow Pages under Autobody Supplies and see if that helps.

                  But, yes, the products you have will work just fine. Just substitue ColorX for the #82 Swirl Free Polish. Therefore:

                  1. Eliminate the isolated defects with the ScratchX by hand.
                  2. Follow with #83 DACP to the entire car; speed 5
                  3. ColorX to further refine the finish.
                  4. 2 coats of NXT Tech Wax

                  Give that a try!

                    None at all in Yellow Pages. The only resource is Meguiar Canada.

                    Okay, I will try your suggestions. One step I forgot to mention - - - i.e. wash the car first using "Deep Crystal Car wash - - - Can't remember the name - the red-pink bottle".

                      Hey,

                      Yes, wash the car with a good car soap. I would also clay the vehicle before entering the buffing steps.

                      I am so surprised that Toronto does not have any dealers!! That is unheard of for a city of that size!!!

                        Hi there,
                        Have you tried the NAPA?? I've just ordered some #81 there and I know they carry the full line of #8x.
                        There is a NAPA in Pickering, you can talk to Phil in the paint dept. (905) 619-3000. Phil can also order it for you if they don't have stock there. So it's better call him before!
                        It's located on Squires Beach Rd (take the Brock Rd exit on #401, go south on Brock and make a left on Bayly. Drive east to Squires Beach Rd (1km) and make a right (it's the Pickering Flea Market in that intersection) and drive pass the first stop sign, it's on your right). You can't miss it, there is a big sign on the side-walk.

                        Cheers

                          As a consumer and a full-time worker like me, I prefer to buy stuff from the retailers. The professional series line of products are not easy to find in any retailer stores. The onley professional series that I can rarely find in here is #2, #7, #39, #40 and #26. I saw the NXT techwax only offer in one retailer store (only 3 left).

                          I will order stuff through Meguiar Canada if my order is over $250 because I prefer to pay an extra $15 for the local delivery.

                          I should order the other 80 series last time when I had the purchase through Meguiar Canada.

                            You should definitely try NAPA, they carry everything you'd mentioned above and even the unigrit detailing paper (the sandpaper), Overspray Clay (C-2000), W8006, W9006 for PC and the price is a little cheaper than Crappy Tire as well.
                            Cheers

                              Oh really? I should try it, thanks a lot. Is this the only retailer who carry Meguiar or auto detailing products? Anywhere else in the G.T.A.?
