The test spot will give you your answer. If you do it will tell you if you pick the right product, if you have to go a little bit more aggressive or two passes will take care of anything you are trying to remove or go much more aggressive because the product you are using it's touching it

We usually say #80 because it's a very versatile product. #9 and #82 are two very mild products, #80 is a little bit more aggressive and usually it works for everyone removing the usual daily driver defects

#80 is kind of the general cleaner/polish to use. If you arent going to buy a whole ton of products at first, that is the one to get.

      #9/#82 - Very Mild
      #80 - Mild
      #83 - Medium

Now, as far as cleaning... Washing the car gets the big dirt particles off, and claying removes the bonded on contaminants from the surface. But that stillcan leave some dirt in the pores of the paint, plus any swirls. With Meguiars, the cleaning step is to get the dirt out of the pores/imperfections, and to remove swirls.

Because the products like #9/82, #80, and #83 are cleaner/polishes, they do contain a fair amount of polishing oils. However, a dark colored car, and one going for a show car look, can benefit (look even better) with a coat of a pure polish, basicaly to get as much polishing oil as possible onto the surface.

As mentioned, if you dont have much in the way of swirls, then you could go to a milder cleaner like #9/#82 if you wish, or just stick with the #80.

Hope that helps, or ask some more...
