  • wax on younger than 30 days paint?

so what happens if you wax paint that is less than 30 days old?

i kinda accidently used one of those wash and wax car soaps to wash my truck yesterday and the campershell is just a little over 2 weeks old which means the paint on it is only about 16 days old.... do i just take scratch X (only paint cleaner i have besides 83) and just wipe it on and wipe it off and it should be ok?

The amount of wax in that wash & wax soap is likely so minimal as to be a non issue for new paint. If you're really concerned about it though, and I don't think you should be, you could always just go over it by hand with ScratchX or another light cleaner polish - that ought to remove what minimal wax was laid down.

I sort of hesitate to tell you to wash it with Dawn dish soap - that will certainly strip the wax, but I might just be over cautious here about using it on fresh paint. It is pretty harsh. In all honesty, between doing nothing and washing it with Dawn, I'd do nothing. Drive it in the rain for a couple of days and that wash & wax coating will likely be history anyway.

haha thanks.... it rained today... i guess that was a good thing.... octane guy suggested the dawn soap too... i was just worried that wax would cause some kind of permanent damage to the paint(peeling, clearcoat failure) because i didnt really know what wax does to new paint...

Fresh paint needs to outgas in order to properly cure. Keeping a constant, heavy coat of wax on top of it will prevent or at least prolong this important process. Exactly what damage will or won't occur if you prevent this outgassing I don't know. If you're really really concerned then I'd just go over it with ScratchX - easily to moderately - and you'll be rid of all the "wax" that was put down by that wash & wax product.

If it has a factory paint job on it then you can do a full detail job it as soon as you like. Factory paint jobs are oven cured in a way that a body shop just can't duplicate, so the paint is fully outgassed before it leaves the factory. Depending on how long it sat at a dealership, how far it traveled (usually by a combination of rail and truck) from the factory to the dealer, it may well have a lot of bonded surface contaminants that a clay bar treatment would remove. Make sure to at least wax after claying, but inspect the surface to see if any sort of polishing is in order between claying and waxing.

Re: wax on younger than 30 days paint?

Bulli's post got me to rereading benhui86's original post and now I have a question:

benhui86, is the paint on your camper shell a fresh repaint, or is it a factory paint job? If it's a fresh repaint then I stand by every thing that has been discussed so far in this thread. If this is the factory paint job then....hmmmmm......not knowing how this particular camper shell manufacturer treats their factory paint I would still err on the side of caution. It may well be that they bake just like the auto manufacturers do, but I don't know for sure. You can always call them and ask. Am I safe in assuming that this is a fiberglass shell? If so it may even be gel coated like a boat, rather than a straight up automotive base coat/clear coat. You might want to double check that as well.

I sincerely apologize for any confusion that may arise from this.

the paint on the shell is factory paint....my campershell is made by LEER and on the LEER website they say that you should wait 90 days before waxing the shell... so i guess they dont bake it like with car manufaturers but they do say that it is automotive paint with bc/cc.... anyways i went and QDed the shell and then wiped it down with dish washing soap.... some random brand... not dawn but im guessing it has same effect as dawn....

OK, great! Sounds like you're good to go then......give it the full 90 days then go crazy with it! If it's a bc/cc then you should be able to treat it like the rest of the truck when the time comes.

Again, I'm going to assume you're talking about a fresh repaint, not a factory paint job.

Any of the quick detailer sprays are fine. You can use #7 Show Car Glaze too if you really want, but you're also fine doing nothing with it until 30 days or so go by, then feel free to polish out any swirls that may have shown up and wax as usual.

yes. fresh paint, not factory paint. so, for now i can use quick detailer, last touch and show car glaze? do you think if i use this product there will be no bad effects in my fresh paint? even my paint is 1 week old onyl. or should i wait for 30 days? after 30 days i can use any meguiars product?

If you want to be as careful as you can be with your fresh paint then stick with products that are what we call "Body Shop Safe", this would be

                          M00 Hi Tech Wash
                          M34 Final Inspection
                          M07 Show Car Glaze

Quik Detailer and Last Touch are great products and it's highly unlikely that they would ever have any negative effect on fresh paint, they are however not "Body Shop Safe"

The idea being is you don't want to use anything on the paint that will act to coat over and seal the paint.
