  • Scratch X vs 83/80

ok, had the DA for a lil over a year, still havent had the opportunity to really have a decent amount of time with it. I have experiemented with it and read about all the proper ways to get the most out of it on MOL. Had a backing plate problem over the summer right after working #83, so was left with marring all over the car. Now that the weather is getting nicer, i was able to work on the roof and the trunklid/spoiler ( I am S L O W, took like 3 hours). They turned out pretty nice. I used #83x2, #80x2, and finished it off with #21x2. There was however a pretty decent size scratch on my trunk lid, probably from removing ice : / Anyway, #83 helped a bit, but I found that one application of ScratchX and really rubbing the heck out of it, go it out in about 30 seconds.

So, is ScratchX stronger due to the fact you can really put the "passion" into it? guess i am just trying to justify the buffer on a performance basis. I realize it speeds up the process, and saves my arm, but, scratchX and major passion seems to yeild some nice results.

    Thoughts?

I use Scratch X for those in between marks you get. Then cover it over with a coat of GC, or NXT. Personally I tried Scratch X on my Trix when I first got it. The results left something to be desired. When I got my G100 I got #83 and #80. #83 took out so much stuff I barely recognized the car when I was done. Followed up by #80 and then GC to top and the car was just incredible! Aside from the paint divits on the hood/bumper, it was a whole new car!

I am switching to NXT though for future work as it makes black pop! Especially with metallic paint like I have.

But Scratch X to me is good for small spots, but if you have tons of webbing and swirling. Nothing can beat #83 on speed 5

Ah, but you likely reduced that scratch quite a bit by applying #83 by machine first. If you're new to the PC then perhaps you didn't apply as much pressure with it as you could have, and that would have an impact on how quickly a defect is removed too. Lots of variables here. In the long run though, you'll be glad you got the PC - imagine having to ScratchX and entire car by hand! Ouch!!!

You know, if properly applied and worked long enough for the diminishing abrasives to break down and really do their thing, 3 hours is not crazy slow for 6 passes on a roof and trunk.

Though I have not seen it recommended on this forum, I use a smaller 4 inch pad for tough isolated scratches. Works like a charm.

Oh, I only use ScratchX (by hand) when I want to remove a scratch without getting out all of my other "stuff".

Try reading this....Mike is out for a couple days...

Hello all, I searched the forum but couldn't find what I needed... I am planning on buffing out my truck again tomorrow, last time all the swirls didn't come out and I want them gone. I used M80, which didn't completely remove the swirls (see Detailed the Truck Today (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread
