  • #21 vs NXT wax

    Hi,

So, one of my friends went to the Meguiars HQ in Irvine, CA and talked to one of the technicians over there about the synthetic sealant (#21) vs NXT wax. The technician said #21 is just a poor mans version of NXT wax. He said don't use #21 and just use NXT wax. However, I quite don't understand how that is true. The reason being is that NXT wax lasts for only 3 weeks while #21 lasts for months. Am I incorrect on this statement? Is my bottle of #21 really useless now since I also have a bottle of NXT wax? Thank you for your opinions.

We have a hard time believing any Meguiar's employee would say such a thing. Instead of majoring on the minors, why not just use the products on your car?

      Hi:

Since you have both products I would do a comparison on your vehicle.

Prepare a section and put 21 on one half and NXT on the other.

That way you can decide which product you like and how it last.

Correct me if I'm mistaken but I believe it has been stated here that Meguiar's NXT is the most durable of all their products.

          Re: #21 vs NXT wax

Why would you/your friend lie about any Meguiar's employee saying that. For one, there is no logic and two they wouldn't be an employee for much longer.

I'd think that any employee would take the Mike stance (as seen from various NXT vs 21 threads): Both are great waxes and both will give great results and protection, use whichever is best for you.

The other thought is that if #21 cost less than NXT (I don't know if that's true, but I think I can get #21 slightly less than NXT) why would someone recommend using NXT? Especially after stating they are the same, but one is cheaper. Just read the Mike stance.

Nope, I believe #16 is, but it is not sold in the United States anymore. I believe #21 is more durable than NXT from what I have read.

I just applied DCP followed up with #21 tonight and I like it a lot.

As Mike said, use them on your car. You already have them so you may as well make use of them .

In terms of durablity, from my experince

                1st is #16
                2nd is #21
                3rd is #26
                4th is NXT
                5th is Goldclass
                6th is DC3

Also, IMO, NXT produces more of a candy shell look where as #21 is a little deeper. Given that both are easy to wipe on/off and much better durablity of #21, I would say that it is the better wax.

Of course everybody has an opinion so try them out and see what you think.

FWIW, here are the quotes I remember reading from Mike.

NXT Tech Wax is now Meguiar's best protecting wax. That means the polymer layer it leaves behind on your finish will protect your finish better than any of our other waxes, and probably better than any other wax on the market.
Here is another quote from Mike.
Meguiar's doesn't make any claims to how long a product will last on the surface but R&D has assured us that at this point in time, NXT Tech Wax offers the best protection of any of our waxes.
I don't recall seeing any similar official comments for #21.

That said, I like both and would use either without hesitation. I get good results from both. I feel that NXT actually delivers a slightly higher reflective look initially but this is my totally subjective opinion. I would be interested in any links to Meguiar's official position on which is considered to be most durable but I doubt there is much difference between the two in that regard. These are great products, IMO.

As I prep for winter I apply a couple coats of NXT and top with #16. I can easily meet winters worst with this approach.

I agree. This is the first time I have used #21. I find #26 the easiest to lay down and remove. How does the shine of #21 compare to #26? I detailed the car tonight, so I wasn't able to pull it out of the garage to look cause it was dark.

I agree with jfelbab when he says NXT 'NXT actually delivers a slightly higher reflective look initially' I also think it would be interesting on how #21 officially compares to NXT's durability.

That said, really I will use either wax and have used either wax and I have no complaints. Both look great and seem to hold up well!

Yes, I was very puzzled when I heard the statement as well. Anyhow, the main topic is that I wanted to know which one was more durable. I do notice that the NXT wax produces a better shine than #21. Thank you all for your replies.

I think the slickness and water repellency of #21 lasts quite a bit longer. If you like the look of NXT (I know I do!). I would suggest topping #21 with NXT. That way you get the best of both worlds. #21 looks great on it's own too BTW.

I've tried both many times. NXT always seems to last less than a month (in terms of water beading, whether or not that is the true indication of durability is a discussion for another day), while #21 lasts for months! I waxed my DD Jeep GC w/ #21 this past easter (April?) and when I applied the winter wax this November, it was still beading like crazy! Like others have said, NXT may look a little shinnier (is that even a word?) at first, but I think #21 gives the best balance of shine vs. depth. I'm definately hooked on #21, but I would highly recommend trying both for yourself to see which one works best for you.
