  • What is the best way to clean polish and care for my bumper?

    Hello All,

I've already read some posts about plastic trim etc. but none of the topics that I could find addressed my question directly.

I've got a new truck and my front bumper has a section of painted plastic/composite. I've attached a photo which I've lightened up alot because the truck is black. Under the labelled section the rest of the bumper is painted metal and then underthat is a section of textured pastic.

This plastic section has more elongated swirl/light scratch marks than I care for and I know I can somehow get them out. (from washes and wipes at the dealers). Once again I summon the vast knowledge of the more experience detailers out there,,,more experienced than me that is.

I have meguiars 80, 82, 83 ,,,,,but I read instances of losing gloss, burning the paint/plastic,,,,so I'm not gonna experiment here without someone to "hold my hand".

Once again, Many thanks in advance!

You can treat those sections as you would any other plastic body panels, ie. just like regular paint. Remember, you are treating the paint, not what is underneath it.

Now, are you working by PC or rotary? A rotary can burn through paint if you are inexperienced with it.

If you are really concerned, you can always ScratchX it by hand, but a PC will be perfectly safe if you already have one.

      Hi Murri25,

Thanks for the reply. I WILL NOT be doing rotary, only PC or by hand. Do you think this section is also clear coated or just painted? I would probably be more comfortable doing this by hand,,,,which compound do you think?

      Thanks-

Yep, it should have a Base Coat/ Clear Coat, as most modern cars do. I'd reccomend Scratch-X if you going to work by hand. After Scratch-X you could use a Deep Crystal 2, or some #82 topped with a wax of your choice.

          Thanks SiriusRIMZ,

Since I have nearly everything made by Meg's, this will be no problem. Which do you think is less abrasive #2 or 82?

About a year ago I called Meg's up several times and got several answers to the aggressiveness between 80, 82 and 83.

          Thanks,
