  • Warning on All Wheel Cleaner

I just got a bottle of the Hot Rims cool care All Wheel Cleaner. It's supposed to be safe for clear coated polished aluminum rims, which I have. But it warns in step 3, "Allow product to penetrate surface for no longer than 15 seconds". That concerns me a bit. What if I happen to leave it on longer than that because I didn't do a good job rinsing off the product. Will it affect my brakes? Will it eat the clear coat? Does All Wheel Cleaner contain acid?

I generally wash my rims with Gold Class car wash, and brush off some of the nooks with an old toothbrush. They aren't generally dirty since I wash them so often, but my rims tend to have a lot of nooks so I'm worried about accumulated build up in hard to reach places. If All Wheel Cleaner is a bit risky, I'd rather just stick to my usual way of cleaning my rims.

Reply: The reason for the firm guidelines on use of our Hot Rims Wheel Cleaner is to prevent problems from occuring and to get the customer to read and follow the directions. What will happen if the product stays on a wheel longer then 15 seconds? As long as the wheel is cool and you have rinsed it down first and only sprayed on ONE wheel. Nothing. If you have sprayed this product on a wheel what is hot or warm and left it on for a minute or so, then you could experience some clouding of the metal that will need to be rubbed out with a metal polish.

A word of advice on wheel cleaners, if your wheels stay very clean in between washes and you dont mind a little elbow grease when you use car wash soap. I recommend that you stick with the method you are currently using for wheel care. If your wheels get dirty in between washes and would like a quicker method for cleaning. A wheel cleaner should give you that providing it is the proper cleaner for your type of wheel.

I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

    Regards,

    Tom

I have non clear coated aluminum rims which are more prone to accidents, ( well other than anodized rims ) and I use that product regularly without any problems.

I have absolutely no use for a wheel cleaner. I have never needed anything more than soap and water. If you seal the wheels with a quality sealant and wash often and apply sealant often you shouldn't need more than soap and water.
