  • Detailing New Cars

    Hello all,

I'm new to this forum, and to detailing, so I thought I'd start by introducing the car I drive:

Its a MY06 Impreza 2.0R Hatch, and since I'm a partial owner I thought I'd actually take care of this one, unlike the family car, which is a '97 Camry and is more likely to be washed by a rainstorm than by a bucket.

    A few questions then:
    1) I've been told not to polish or wax a brand new car because its got a protective layer on top of the clear coat. I've looked this up on the 'net and there seem to be two sides, one calling myth one not. Could someone please lay this to rest for me, as there are a few swirl marks on the car's rear end, and a definite clear-coat scratch on the bonnet. Can a brand new car be polished/waxed?

    2) On those swirl marks:

Will Paint Cleaner be sufficient to remove these, or do I need Scratch X? They are actually a bit better defined than the picture shows, but are not deep.

    3) I know there are a few textile people around these forums, so maybe you can identify this cloth for me (The package says "polishing cloth" and its what I used on the camry every year or so for waxing):

From the lack of info on the package, I could have been using steel wool as my applicator for the last few years and not known.

That's it for now, thanks in advance for any help you can give!

    1) Yes, its a myth you can polish/wax a new car! i would actaully highly recomend it
    2) scratchX is a paint cleaner and yes i would think that you need it to remove the swirls
    3) i have no clue what frabric that is kinda looks like a cut out of a patato sack to try a Supreme Shine Microfiber to remove wax

Hi, and thanks for the quick reply.

AFAIK the cloth is an open weave, but I can't tell if its synthetic or cotton and I guess there really isnt enough in the photo for a guess.

And to clarify for the paint cleaner, I meant meguiars deep crystal cleaner vs Scratch X. Nevermind though, I'm reading through the links you gave me and finding a lot of useful info.

Well, I am sure you will have more questions, but to get the current ones:

        1. You can certainly clay/clean/polish/wax a new car. Definately get some Quick Clay.. it is the best thing for a new car.

        2. DC#1 is a good, but very mild cleaner. It will never remove swirls/scratches. You will definately want ScratchX by hand.

        3. I dont know what that towel is and I wouldnt use it.

I would use Water Magnet Towels for drying, and Supreme Shine MF towels for removing products like cleaner, wax, etc.

I have a roll of those cloths. Its made of cotton and guaranteed not to scratch the paint work.

I don't use it much anymore. I use Meguiars microfibre towels now to remove wax. It really does cut the wipe off time in half!
