Hello all,
I'm new to this forum, and to detailing, so I thought I'd start by introducing the car I drive:

Its a MY06 Impreza 2.0R Hatch, and since I'm a partial owner I thought I'd actually take care of this one, unlike the family car, which is a '97 Camry and is more likely to be washed by a rainstorm than by a bucket.
A few questions then:
1) I've been told not to polish or wax a brand new car because its got a protective layer on top of the clear coat. I've looked this up on the 'net and there seem to be two sides, one calling myth one not. Could someone please lay this to rest for me, as there are a few swirl marks on the car's rear end, and a definite clear-coat scratch on the bonnet. Can a brand new car be polished/waxed?
2) On those swirl marks:

Will Paint Cleaner be sufficient to remove these, or do I need Scratch X? They are actually a bit better defined than the picture shows, but are not deep.
3) I know there are a few textile people around these forums, so maybe you can identify this cloth for me (The package says "polishing cloth" and its what I used on the camry every year or so for waxing):

From the lack of info on the package, I could have been using steel wool as my applicator for the last few years and not known.
That's it for now, thanks in advance for any help you can give!
