  • Just too cold...Brrrrr!!!!

    Hey,

OK…I think I really lost it this time! The question often gets asked, “How cold can it be and still detail?” Well…I was planning on doing a write-up for MOL, showing some of the issues of working in the cold. So last night, I went out and washed my truck.

I guess I should have checked the actual temperature and wind chill factor before I started washing. When rinsing the truck, by the time I went around the truck, the water had froze on the truck, canopy, and boat rack…everywhere!!! And I mean froze!!!! Icicles had formed on my mirrors and all over the place in less than a couple of minutes! Never-mind that I could not feel my fingers, ears or nose!

My attention quickly went from washing the truck, to trying to make sure I could back into or back out of it, in case the doors froze shut! I had to leave the doors opened (I did not dare close them!) as I went inside my house to locate some spray silicone and some lock deicer! I spent the next 30 minutes trying to wipe the inside of the doorjambs. Have you tried to wipe something with a towel that is now covered with ice? Not fun, trust me!

So this morning, I will go outside and see if I will be able to detail it or not. Otherwise, I may have to wait a couple of days until it warms up a little!

Here is a picture of my mirror with a sheet of solid ice on it! Like I said…I think I have lost it!

One more...notice the water spray that froze on the paint? At least the doorjambs are clean!

Were you working inside or outside? What do you do about ice in the driveway at those temps?

If my doors freeze shut, I merely jump over them...

Have you thought about cutting the top of your cab off?

LOL... yeah, please do. I'd love to see pictures of the Meguiar's garage covered in a foot of snow

              Tim....

              yep looks a little cold.

I think you need to add on to the garage so you can get that beast in the garage, makes it a little more pleasant to wash in the cold.

Yep, working in the cold really is a whole new school of thought. I have been doing Ok with it so far. I have had my little issues but overall do OK. I have to say that I have started using the local Touch Free Autowash though. I hate it but I have to do the best I can. I can usually go through there then go straight to work. I now have a heated space at work were I can do some minor touch up work so at least I can QD, wax, and detail out of the cold. I have been trying to watch the weather and look for those few totally sunny days with low windchill and decent temps. The are getting few and far between but when I get those I will be attempting some decent hand washes.

I guess the upside of using the Touchless washes in the winter is that I can make use of the Under Carriage washes.

The touch Free here really blows the wax off so I have started waiting until after a rain or snow. Run it through the touchfree, then go to work and give it 1-2 good QDs. Then I go to a wax. I am thinking about switching over to the A-12 cleaner wax for the rest of the winter as I don't have the time to give the truck a good pre-wax prep. It's hard trying to talk myself into stepping away from the Synthetics with my white paint though. I wonder if #20 would be a better alternative for me for those times when I can't do a good pre wax prep. I have not tried Color-X on my truck yet. I guess thats a good option as well. I have been pretty lucky though. I have been able to wax once a week even though it is cold. My pre-wax prep has alot to be desired though. I can't stand nothaving that just waxed look. I think I am addicted to getting compliments on it.

Don't mistake my enthusiasm for experience.

Yea...I would LOVE to have a garage big/high enough to hold the truck!!! We have a 2 car garage, but it is way too low for my truck, even without the boat!

The palm tree with Christams lights is in a Corona beer commercial. I liked it but didn't think it would go with the polar bear & reindeer in my front yard.

Here is a thought.... back down your driveway, maybe a little into the yard of the hose across from you and get a run for it. Should slide right in rather nice with all that #21 on it.
