I haven't posted the picture of the dirty clay patty yet...

Those 6 clay patties were used on the driver's side for training purposes, later when we clayed the passenger's side of the hood we used one clay patty not that this is the right technique but to fully capture just how bad the build-up of contaminants was on this car.

Re: Pictures from February 21st, 2009 - Saturday Open Class!

After the garage portion of the class there's a feedback form to be filled out by the students, we use this time to restore the entire hood of the demo car so the owner doesn't have to drive around with shiny spots on the hood of their car until they can get to it.

So while the students were filling out the feedback form we clayed, cleaned, polished and waxed the passenger side of the hood,

Under normal conditions you would knead your clay as you work to expose fresh clay. This car was the exception however as it had not been taken care of for 9 years, so to capture just how bad the build-up of contaminants was, we used one clay patty to clay the passenger's side of the hood and NOT fold and knead the clay just to capture the below picture.

And yes, after claying off the majority of the bonded contaminants off one half of the hood and taking the above picture we had to clay it again and then compounded, polished and waxed the paint to get these kinds of results,

If you look at the code for the name of the pictures of the clay patty above it reads,

Again, thank you to Samir for bringing the car with dead paint so we could bring it back to life and in the process teach the proper techniques for working by hand and machine.

The owner of that Nissan must be really happy. They got a free detail and the car looks new again.

Thank you Mike for selecting the car! I never thought anyone could bring back such a dead finish with just standard OTC products and the proper application. Just a testament to Meguiars products. And the only thing the professional line would have done is save time. Although it would have been interesting to try an agressive clay bar.

Understanding which product is to be used and when is key. That's what I took home from this class. And now I know what to do when faced with problems on any of my cars.

SO, did you have to throw away the clay bars after this detailing job? Could they be used again?

Someone asked this at the class and I said,

They can be used again... just not on my car...

We threw the spent clay away... You have to use common sense and good judgment, when you work on a car in this condition, it's pretty obvious that the clay will become so contaminated that it would be unsafe to use it on another car.

                          I think/hope MyFirstES300 was joking. Haha.

Anyway, good job guys. That dirt looks like it was pretty intense. I wish I was there to see/be a part of that!

Actually, no I was not joking as I haven't clayed yet. I'm in the learning stages.

And claying to the point the clay is that dirty only makes your polish work more as the dirt embedded in the surface of the clay will only add more scratches that you will have to polish out.

I learned a lot about clay that day. I was using clay too gently before. But once you clay, it is important to continue the entire process or you WILL make the damage worse by just claying.

And we didn't even get all the damage. It's a single stage paint, so it will probably be possible to bring it completely back to new. You can still see some of the damage underneath in this shot. Look at where the flash hit.

that hood did come out great

its a good example of how powerful Ultimate Compound is as well, these 3 new swirl and scracth removers in the consumer line really do change things when diagnosing a problem on a vechile, more products to work with and it makes dialing in a process much better
