    Pre-Holiday Fun Class!

We're going to hold an open class on Thursday, December 14th starting at 5:00pm and going to around 9:00pm We have a member driving down from the Oxnard are to learn how to use our Solo 1 System to wet-sand, cut and polish a car he's painting, so while we're in the garage we thought we'd go ahead and open the doors to others that want to work on their car or just come hang out.

We're still sanding and buffing in the garage, pictures to come tomorrow.

Great night tonight, very informative! There is so much I want, and need, to learn about the rotary.

Here's the Miata trunklid Mike was helping with and instructing on all evening. You could scan the barcode in the overhead fluorescent lights!

Here's Paul (AKA The Other PC) using a handy dandy little tool he stole, er, borrowed from work to help Shawn and I determine the RPM generated at various settings on our Porter Cable rotary buffers. Thanks Paul!!

Once again, a big "Thank You" to Meguiar's and Mike Phillips for a fun evening!!

OK, well that was my trunk lid. I can't believe Mike has stuff posted here already, geez. What an informative afternoon/evening. I can't thank Mike, Jason and Meguiars enough for opening the garage and putting this on. Especially Mike! He hardly even flinched when he saw the orange-peel I brought him. What a great organization!! I learned an awful lot and now must see if I can apply it on my own. I have to say, going into this I was ready to hire someone, but I feel confident enough to tackle it now. Thanks to all the others who showed too.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

          Time to buy some tools!

Here's some before shots of the orange peel and a little bit of dirt in the paint, (DIP).

Note: In mose cases below, my finger isn't pointingn to anything specific but is in the picture to give the camera something to focus on in order to caputre the surface of the panel.

Here are some of the pictures I took last night.

You left out licking the water off. Oh, wait a minute, that's my cat, not my car. Uh, I mean my cat licks himself dry. I don't lick my cat dry. Or my car. -PC.

So what did you use to wet sand with? What grits? I am curious in wetsanding. I have not tried it nor am I going to for a while..

Mike or Mike(s) Can you recommend a site, besides the information found here on MOL, where I can find lots of information on wet sanding and the products for the job????

Re: Pictures from the Pre-Holiday Fun Class!

I can tell you what we did, but I will defer to the experts. We did two passes . One with 1500 and one with 2500. Both using Meguiars Unigrit. Let the papers soak atleast 15-20 minutes in water with a touch of 00 Wash. Mike says overnight is better. Wrap the paper around a flexible sanding block and keep dipping the block/paper in the water to keep everything wet. A spray bottle of water/wash is also handy. Hold the block flat to the paint surface, but on a slight angle relative to the strokes. Mike suggests alternating directions as you go at right angles so you don't dig any trenches. Every so often, squeegy or wipe the water off so you can see your progress . Important tip: Don't sand where you can't or won't polish! Like the edges. Mike says to stay about 3/4 inch back from edges. We didn't, althouh we tried, and a LOT of time was spent trying to polish them without burning the edges. Mike managed to do a GREAT job, but we (he) probably spent 60-70 percent of the whole effort on the edges of the tiny panel. I won't try to explain the polishing part.

After polishing, we spotted a tracer about 8-10 inches long in the middle of the panel. So we very, very lightly hit it with 3000 and re-polished that area and took care of that.

Another tip: Spray the paint flat to start with.

BTW, this paint was only 2 days old on the top two layers and 7 days on the bottom three. Older paint is harder and the job will go differently for you on old paint.
