  • What did you work on today! - October 30th, 2005

    What did you work on today?

    I buffed out a 1987 Volvo and detailed the engine compartment. I'll add a couple of before pictures below, but it will be tomorrow before I add any after pictures as it got dark outside as I finished it... Besides that, it's time to hit the hot tub.

    By the way, for all our forum regulars and for new members, if you're posting questions on Sunday, just to let you know, as a rule I try to take Sunday off as it's not healthy to work 7-days a week. I've done this a lot in the past on the forum, and in life and now days, life is too short to work all of the time.

    My typical Sunday starts with taking the family to church early in the morning, and then spending the rest of the day either relaxing with my family or working on a project of some sort usually with my son Rand who's 6-years old.

    I always feel a little bad because I know a lot of people are registering and posting questions, but there comes a time when you just have to push away from the keyboard. Life is too short to spend all of your time answering questions on a discussion forum.

    This is why, if you visit the forum on a Sunday you'll often see the below on the homepage, or what we call the Frontpage of the forum,

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Sunday - October 30th, 2005
    Sunday, a day to rest and relax and recharge your batteries from the week gone by while revitalizing your spirit for the forthcoming week. We encourage you to spend some quality time with family and friends.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    It's my subtle way of telling everyone I'm not going to hang-out on the forum all day, it's not that I don't want to, it's just important to have balance. I hope everyone understands...

    Here's some before shots of the Volvo...

    Now what did you folks work on today?

    Or did you take the day off?

    Did routine maintenance on my Honda Ridgeline.

    Just routine exterior work. Wash, Blow Dry, QD. Dressed the trim & tires. Windows. Even played in the Engine Compartment for the first time. Just got in there with a Terry and some HD playing around. Did not do enough to accomplish anything. Just getting a taste for it because I can see a full Engine Deatil coming soon. Spent about 5 hours just taking my time enjoying the day.

    Also broke out the chainsaw and log splitter. Cleaned up the woodpile a little and busted up some kindling. Getting cold enough to start burning the wood stove and firelace again. Fired them up for the first time yesterday.

    Also straightened up my computer room/junk room. Something I noticed was after I straightened up and put away all my detailing stuff. The room was fine. Hmmm.

      Finally got enough time to do a Dawn wash and try out the NXT Tech Wax. Used a DA and a 5" foam pad to put it on, and a Miracle Bonnet to take it off.

      Went on nice, what I was impressed most with was how nice it came off. Used one bonnet for the whole car - and I have a big car and was surprised to see it go that far. It comes off easy and the BEST thing about it is I didn't have to be so careful on fender seams - the stuff is almost invisible and if it does get in a crack it comes right out without any effort!

      What worries me is the fact that on the bottle it has a huge warning (ALL CAPS) not to get it on rubber, vinyl or cloth. Of So the window seals and door seals, where the rubber is exposed, worried me a bit. But all in all I love the stuff.

      Also tried the all surface interior detail - now someone finally came up with the right idea! That stuff worked great.

      And the rest of the day was doing the typical mid-West weekend preparations for fall. It was 32 degrees when I got up and got ready to golf yesterday!

      Thanks Mike for doing such a great job for us all. You deserve to have not just one but two days off - don't feel guilty at all - just enjoy your family and volvo detailing and whatever else a detailing fanatic does during his time off. lol.

        My day:
        • Mowed lawn
        • Pulled weeds
        • Pruned tree
        • 13 mile bike ride
        • 2 mile run
        • Took the wife out to dinner
        • Washed the bird poop off the Cobra
        • Decorated the foyer in glowing spiderwebs for the kids tomorrow night
        Wife and I are looking forward to handing out candy. We get a bazillion kids here because we're a circle that's off of a dead end, so there is zero traffic. In fact we get kids by the minivan from other neighborhoods too.

        I bought 8 jumbo bags of candy. Hopefully we won't run out too soon.

          I tend to be the generous type on Holloween. Our first year in our new house, the wife left me at home to hand out candy while she took the kids about. We really did not know how many kids would show. I started out giving a respectable sized handful to each. Then the handfulls got smaller. Ran out of about 10 lbs of candy within the first hour or so. Went back in the house to scrounge. Found the kids lunch box goodies. They did not last long either. OK, back in the house. Hmm. Found the wife's stash of Reese Cups and Hershey bars in the freezer. Didn't last long enough either. OK, back in. Raided the fruit bowl and the extra fruit on the bottom of the fridge. Hmm, not enough either. Out came Warehouse club sized box of microwave popcorn.

          About this time the wife shows up. Takes the kids in the house and comes back out mad as heck. Told me to get in the house, turn off the lights because she had to now go grocery shopping. I guess it was a good thing because the frozen pork chops and chicken legs were up next.

                I spent the morning relaxing and I did a quick test of some products.

                In the afternoon, I took my pup down to Lake Francis and we walked around the lake and through the woods. She gets such a kick out of that, acting like she's wild, but never getting too far away either.

                Then I made dinner, and in the evening I read.

                  I actually didn't do much of anything because it was snowing outside up here so had to stay inside and watch cartoons with the daughter. Then I had to drive her down the mountain pass to her mothers and was about to cry as I pulled the truck out of the garage and watched it get dirty in a heartbeat from the dirty roads...LOL

                    Mike, is that a Volvo 780?

                    My girlfriend's parents have a 780 Bertone Coupe from 1990 which some fairly decent-looking paint. I'm excited to see the finished photos of this old Volvo.
