  • At wits end!! What to do with car....

Hey guys I'm doing this .
I have a 99 Ford Taurus 3.0 V6 code U, 95000 miles. The check engine lite is on AGAIN. Car is mis-firing badly. This is what I have done so far:

    1. Changed original plugs (they were shot) with Bosch +2
    2. New Motorcraft wires
    3. Fuel filter
    4. 2 new fuel injectors.
This has been done over the last 2 months. Today I drove it and it started shaking at idle and lite came on.
Any ideas? Get rid of car? Fix it?Saw a fine looking 06 Ranger on lot tonight. Thanks for any input.

Check all sensor connectors for dirt or looseness, coolant level when cold, visually inspect mass air flow sensor for dirt, make sure EGR valve is functioning properly. The FOMOCO EGR has the propensity to hang open after exceeding 2600 RPM thus creating a loss of engine vacuum therefore send a rich signal to ECM & possible loading of plugs w/ excessive fuel. Don't forget to clear all codes from ECM when done & prior to next test ride. Good luck!

Thanks!! Dark now, will check out tomorrow. EGR was replaced afew years ago. It still has the original Ford battery should change before cold weather. It's getting frustrating.

first thing is check the codes, based on what codes are pulled up that will give you an idea of which direction to go in your trouble shooting.

Check out the forum I spend most of my time at: Ranger Power Sports... They have a very infromative 3.0 liter board, I bet with a little searching, you will find the problem with the taurus.

Will do!! This all started afew months ago. Lite came on code said misfire on #1. At 95000 miles time for plugs wires etc. Replaced those, cleared computer, ran fuel injector cleaner, ran great, then a few weeks later car began running rough, lite came back on. This time misfire on # 5. Checked connections, then injector it self. Put stethascope on it and no clicking. Replaced that injector, ran fine for a few weeks then # 2 went bad, again no clicking on the injector, power was to both injectors. Replaced that one. brother in law has computer will get tommorow after work.

if yout sure its not a plug or a wire (commom causes of misfires), then look at your coil pak. If you have a 3-pak coil system swap them around and see if the misfires changes to a new cylinder or just buy a new coil and take your chances

limit your troubleshooting to electrical problems before tackling fuel problems .. good luck

Fuel not problem. Replaced pump and filter 3 months ago plus starter, brakes etc. She may be getting tired. Had to replace a bad plug amoth ago even though they were new. Will find out tommorrow. Could be another bad plug, maybe they were dropped at parts store. Thanks to all!!!

Thank you all!! Did not know there was a tauras forum. I'm thinking coil pak too. Will find out today. Especially if the code is on # 2 or 5 they share the same coilpak. And have previous codes on them.
What's interesting this car was a road warrior driven hard everyday no problems . Then I got a new job and I ride the bus, which BTW needs detailing. Car is hardly driven now.

How old are the plugs? I am not a Ford guy, but the mention of 3 coil-packs would lead me to believe the system is a waste-spark system.

On GM cars that require platinum plugs, the waste spark will eat through platinum plugs like Bosch in about 10-15,000 miles. Because of the waste spark feature, the plug will arc in both directions, so you need platinum on both sides, which many aftermarket plugs don't have.

Just a thought. What you really need to do, though, is figure out what isn't working. Is it no spark? Or no fuel? Then go from there...
