My recipe is a mix of store bought and home made. I cook mine in a crock-pot but you could also cook on the stove using low heat.

    1lb. ground beef
    1 onion
2 32oz. jars of store bought spagetti sauce. I use Newmans Own but Ragu or any commercial
    brand would work.
    1 small can(6oz?) tomato paste
4 cloves garlic (or more if you love garlic!)
    LOTS of mushrooms thickly sliced.
    Garlic salt and pepper
    Olive oil

Put the 2 jars sauce and can of tomato paste into crock-pot.
Brown the ground beef with 2 cloves chopped garlic and season with salt and pepper to taste. Put into crock-pot.
Slice and quarter onion. Saute with olive oil and and 1 clove chopped garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook till just starting to brown. Put into crock-pot.
Saute mushrooms in olive-oil with 1 clove chopped garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook till just starting to brown. Put into crock-pot.

If you want more garlic, chop and put into crock-pot. Stir everything up and turn on crock-pot. Cover.
Cook on low for 7-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.

If you don't have a crock-pot, just use a large stew-pot on the stove. Bring everything up on heat till it just starts to simmer and then turn down to low heat and cover.

This will be enough for 2 dinners. I usually freeze half. Or you can use this for one BIG pan of lasagna.

    Enjoy!

        thanks SVT,

i'll try that tomorrow, we just dont get decent italian food over here, its normally just tomato sauces.

we're trying to eat healthier and alot of the packaged and tinned ready made sauces are full of sugar which isnt good.

        thanks again

LOL!!....I love the smell of sauce cooking all day and then sitting down to a plate of pasta with fresh sauce and italian bread warmed in the oven with a nice cabernet.....especially when I spend the better part of that same day detailing... a nice hot shower and bring on the pasta !!!

                  You're welcome Alex.

You can always use canned crushed tomatoes if you want to start from scratch. But then you need to add all the herbs to spice it up. One of the best ready mades I have used in my store/home made version is Barilla. Let us know how it turns out.

A good tomato sauce should definitely have a good amount of garlic in it.

Here's the seasonings I put in mine:

Fresh garlic, minced and sauteed in a small amount of olive oil (then add it to the sauce)

                          Salt

                          Basil

Crushed red pepper (if you like spicy)

Season it to your own taste.

                            crushed pepper?

can you buy it or is it just finely chopped pepper?
by the way sorry for all the questions

Non Meat version. Good basic recipe you can start with . Add some hot pepper if you like some zing .

                              Serves 6

                              1/4 cup of olive oil
4 cloves of garlic sliced in half
1 Med. Onion left whole , peel the skin ( disgard when finished or eat it )
1 35oz can of imported Italian tomatoes
3 basil leaves, washed, patted dry and chopped
                              1/2 teaspoon of oregano
                              salt & pepper to taste

                              1. Place garlic and olive oil in large sauce pan.
                              2. Turn heat to medium and cook until garlic is soft and lightly browned.
                              3. Crush the tomatoes and add with their juices.
                              4. Fill empty tomato can 1/4 of the way with water and pour in with tomatoes
                              5. Add basil, oregano, salt and pepper.
                              6. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to a simmer and cook until thickened approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Enjoy !
Success is based on the quality of the job done !
