  • What Ever Happened to These Waxes?

    When I waxed a long time ago (late 70's to early 80's), of course I used Meg's (seriously). But my friends used other waxes: Two come to mind and I have no idea whom the Manufactures are/were:

    1) Rain Dance Wax
    2) Kitt Wax

    Can you add to this thread to think of more waxes (come and gone) and where are they now (like changed name/repackaged or died on the vine)?

    A blast from the past...

    back in the 80's, I used to use Rain Dance before I was turned on to #7 and 16 combo.

    I am curious to know about this as well...

        Last week I was going through a closet full of old stuff at my mom's and came across a 1/2 can of Rain Dance
        By the way Kit Wax, they still sell it here, I believe is the #1 selling wax in our country (it's pretty cheap). They also have some other products like car wash, tire shine, etc.

          Rain Dance and Kit are still around, so is Simoniz. Vista was a sub-brand of Simoniz. Of course Turtle Wax is still with us, and remember Blue Coral? Still around. We also used to use Johnsons Wax in the '60s.

            In CA, here is what I can find on the shelves:

            Kit Wax (Very Cheap.. mediocre)
            Meguiar's (Supurb)
            Mother's (Supurb)
            Zymol (Superb)
            Turtle (Cheap and not too good)
            Blue Coreal (Quite Good)
            RainX (yes they make car wax too)
            DuPont (Quite Good for what you paid)

            Then there are a few others too that I really cannot think of.

            I feel each company is known for one or more great products.

            For instance, RainX has a great Origional Glass Treatment, they make washer fluid, then have some questionable products like Windshild Wax and their Washer Fluid Additive, not to mention their Anti-Fog fluff (IMO).

            Meguiar's is known for their Nxt and GC.

            Stonner is known for Invisible Glass. It is their one product that really stands out for that company.

              I've still got a couple oddities in the back of my supply cabinets, left over from when my dad was into car care many, many years ago. One is Meguiar's "Tough Truck Wax" (something like that) and the other is ArmorAll Car Wax -- the AA stuff is like the harshness of NuFinish times 10 or so. You could wipe chrome plating right off a bumper with that stuff

                This is what I used back in the late 70's and most of the 80's...

                I thought it was discontinued, but it's still available. It was one of the better hand applied products that I used to use.

                I think it's made by Turtle Wax, but I'm not sure.

                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                Anyone remember the old Mack's line of products that were sold by NAPA back in the 1960's?
                  I've been looking for the Tough Truck Wax, can I buy this from you for my collection?
                    Remember that hideous “Color Back” **** that came out around mid eighties I think.
                    Used it once on an old Dodge I had & not impressed at all.
                    That’s one product I’m glad to see not on the market anymore. At least not around these parts.
                      Mike: Life Insurance wax? If you die while waxing your car, your family gets $50000?
                          Rusty Bumper- Heh heh, a friend of mine swore by that TR3 stuff when we were kids!
                          Some others that're now history (AFAIK) include Classic (taupe-colored cleaner wax), Snap (cool classic cars on their tins!), and Pro used to make a paste cleaner wax (forget the number, we called it "Pro Blue") that they no loner offer . There was "The Treatment", a gel type wax in a tube and I hear it's still being made, but I never see it anywhere. And there were the early synthetics like the Blue Coral stuff that went on like something you'd use on your kitchen floor- that was some nasty stuff.
                            Do they still make "Rally", in the white tin?
                            Do you have the paste or the liquid? I didn't recall the liquid being all that bad, but IIRC I only tried it once.
                            Sure wish I'd kept all the products that've passed through my family over the years...I remember hearing what a breakthrough #16 was, how it was the most user-friendly wax around in the '50s.
                              Took me a bit to get this joke. If you look at Mike's picture of his "Little" collection, on the top shelf, middle portion, there it is. LOL. What ever happened to coffee table books that were conversation pieces? LOL. I will have to see if my wife will let me have my own little shrine somewhere in the house. Most likely, I will get a corner in the basement and share the space with the spiders.
                              Nice collection Mike. I see other stuff besides Megs there. So I take it your collecting vintage car care products of other manufactures too?
