  • We all love to shine our rides, what else do you like to do???????

When I am not shining my cars I am trying to make 'em go fast. I am just starting to get into older less popular power plants, cadies, buick etc...

I also love to garden everything from flowers to veggies.

My other passion is collecting old firearms, M1, Mausers, Russian, Japan, etc.. most all WWII era or before.

When not working on your vehicle what could one find you doing???

When not working on cars, I typically work with computers or networks.

Take yesterday for instance. I was at work and went out to a site because several people said, "There is something wrong with my computer I cannot login.

Obviously, multiple people were not having the problem.

I verified DHCP was working (assigns IP addresses and configureation). Then I tried to ping the server by name and that did not work. I was able to ping by IP though. I thought it was DNS that was the culprit as I could not ping the DNS servers. They were on the other side of the WAN th ough.

So, I tried to ping another site and nothing, yet as far as I knew the other sites were fine.

So, I tried to ping the router and couldn't even ping the ethernet side of it.

I decided to reboot the Cisco 2600, and it came back up but still couldn't reach the ethernet port. I plugged into the console port and checked it to find it properly configured.

        It looks like this:

In back it has a Console and Aux port. They are for configureation.

There is either one or two serial ports don't really know how many, but they connect to a T1 or T3 line though a DSU/CSU for Wide Area Network connections, and there is an Ethernet port for connecting to the swith on the LAN (Local Area Network). Essentially, when someone sends an email or goes out to the Internet, their computer determins the IP address does not belong to the LAN and therefore it looks at the IP specified as the Default Gateway and sends the request to that which is the router. The router then routes the info across teh WAN where there is another router on the otherside. Each chooses the correct route and eventually gets data where it needs to go.

Contrary to popular belive, the Cisco routers are not very fast. They are limited by the T1 or T3 lines as to how fast they can send data across the WAN, but they are very intelligent and are aware of Packets at the Network Layer not just the Data-Link layer like Swithces.

There was no link light on either the router or the Switch after rebooting the router, so I thought maybe a bad cable. Changed that and it made no difference.

Rebooted the MDF switch at that site even though there were over 100 users, 3 servers, and 4 fiber runs comming from it. I figured what else can I do either the router or switch is broken.

After the reboot, Module H got stuck in some sort of Diagnostics mode after all the others started up. Eventually it just shutdown module H and had a fault light with H blinking.

Since the router was on Module H, that explained it. I had port 24 of Module H already configured specifically to match the routers duplex and speed settings, so I unplugged everything from G and H and moved module G to the Module H spot and plugged everything in... Fixed even though it had a hole where there used to be a module and there wasn't room to plug all the comptuers plugged into the MDF back in. I would say there were about 5 computers I couldn't find ports on the switch.

In case you are wondering, it is an HP ProCurve 5308 (I think) and the module looks like this:

All the modules and chasis for the HP ProCurve stuff is LifeTime Warrantee, so I brought a replacement module back from the office later that day and put it in the box to ship back to HP.

The Switch Chasis looks like this:

Essentially, you remove the cover and put in a module. They are all hot swappable, and there are many different types of modules. There are Gigabit, their is Fiber, and Fast Ethernet...

For instance this picture *****, but I belive this to be a fiber module.

The ProCurve 5308 at that site has a 12 port Gigabit (1000 mbps) module for things like servers and very special workstations that need extremely fast connections. It has one Fiber Module with 4 Fiber runs connecting it to for Other Swithces IDFs Referred to as Intermediate Distribution Facilities, and 6 24 port Fast Ethernet modules.

The IDF's Look like these, but have one Fiber Module, which has 2 fiber ports and about 12 Ethernet ports on that module. They look like this:

It is actually quite simple. By connecting two swithces together either by fiber or standard ethernet cable, you get more ports and can plug more computers into the network.

Fiber is better because it is fast and can be ran very very far > 100 meters, which you can't do with ethernet cable. The swithes link together so well with Fiber they act as one.

I like to ride (bicycles). I have seven of them in the house. Two for the lady, and the rest for me.

I like to eat too, but that's kind of a given if you ride, heh.

In the winter I ski, though I've not done so for a while now.

Outside of helping out & learning here at MOL, and detailing cars as often as I can, I like to walk on the nature trails around here for exercise, and I like to fiddle with my PC as much as possible.

I have two aquariums that I enjoy, and I enjoy listening to music on my HT setup, as well as recording music (Gospel) to give to anyone that wants it.

My other Hobby is Radio Monitoring. Specifically I monitor Military Aircraft Frequencies. Non-Encrypted stuff of course. I work at a Military Flight Test Center and developed the interest years ago. Then, unfortunately 9/11 happened and I found myself listening to the great people protecting our skies on a regular basis.

I have about 20 assorted radios and 6 computers dedicated to the task so I don't miss to much. My main interest is finding the freqs used then identifyong who uses them and for what reason.

Other than that I volunteer with the local Red Cross Disaster Action Services when needed. Also I do some field lining for the local youth soccer organization. I used to be director of fields but found someone else who wanted the job. gave it up gladly. Being the sole person responsible for seeing to it that 14 soocer fileds are lined up every week gets old after a while.

Anyway, that's my story and I am sticking it. Uh yep.
              Jeff Smith

Don't mistake my enthusiasm for experience.

I am an HAM Radio Licensee.

Got the Licence years ago. I am KD5IXD.

Haven't talked on amateur radio in about a year or so, but I still have the licence.

I took up golf too, but got tired of that.

Everything I do is in phases.

When I'm not working, I build giant-scale radio controlled aircraft for folks all over the country, who fly them either for enjoyment or in high-level competitions. I fly 'em too but can' make them perform like some people can.

                    They look like this:

Those planes are HUGE! I used to do that years ago but stopped after a nose dive from about 250ft.

Anyway, I ski, bike (road + mountain), work on cars, and that's about all I have time for anymore. Soon I'll have a motorcyle so I'll be riding a lot. I'm getting back into whitewater kayaking next year and maybe some low level road racing. I stopped kayaking after hanging out with the suicidal crowd too long.

Those are so cool!!!! I wish I had the time and money to do that!
                        Planes are my second obsession!

If I'm not doing something to our cars I'm usually working with someone else's. Be it repair, polish, or upgrading something.

And if I'm not doing any of the above I'm watching racing!

I'm obsessed about cars! CARS,CARS,CARS,CARS, & MORE CARS

I also work in my house (it's been an ongoing processs),do woodworking projects, and sit and read Megs online on this stupid electronic obsession!

Oh and I play F1 Challenge on the pc too! (CARS AGAIN!)

Except that I broke the controller I was using (wore it out) so I'm idle till I go pick up a replacement.

Between my truck and school, I don't have that much free time. When I do, I like to play paintball, snowboard, make mosaics, and play Tiger Woods golf on xbox. This summer my grandpa taught me how to use a chain saw and I LOVED it!!!! I cut down some trees at his lake house in northern Wisconsin with my brother. Using the chain saw is a lot like waxing, you kind of get into a zone, not paying attention to other stuff, but just focusing in on your job at hand. One day, I want to start collecting handguns, and take up shooting at the range. For now, shooting squirrels with my paintball gun will have to do! Don't worry they don't die, they just get zapped a bit.
If your not driving fast, your driving half-a**ed!
